The AfriCat Foundation has its centre in the private Okonjima sanctuary. AfriCat also stands for "A Free Cat" and aims to protect cheetahs. The project has been in place since 1992 and - it must be said so harshly - has failed. The visit is a waste of time.
Okonjima is 200 km2 in size. In its heart, seven cheetahs currently live in separate enclosures, five of them from one litter. They are 14 years old and therefore cannot produce desirable offspring. In the past, attempts were made to reintroduce the cats. The attempt failed. The cheetahs released for release died. The remaining cats receive their bread of grace here. The entrance fee of 800 NAD per person finances the meat the animals need to survive.
The lecture that you have to endure at first is boring and without direction. In the end, you are driven to the poor creatures and can see them up close.
If the animals were released into the Etosha NP, they would die or be killed. Elsewhere, they cannot be used as a threat to existing wildlife. Farmers kill cheetahs as the animals attack the livestock. Namibia is also one of the countries in Africa with the highest population of wild cheetahs, with a population of about 4000 wild cheetahs. The animals from Okonjima are therefore superfluous, as harsh as that may sound.

2h tour which consists mainly of hearing the history of the foundation and its role of education then very quick tour to see the cheetahs only current occupants. The experience is interesting but too long, for a local Award not given (940 NAD per adult) and fixed time.

Access to the Africat Foundation is through a beautiful natural area where we meet many free-ranging animals: warthogs, onyx, several types of antelope, giraffes. It is very pleasant, the decor based on shrubby plains, red rocks and small mountains, illuminated by the morning sun, is rather idyllic.
We made the 11h drive to approach the cheetahs and discover the missions of the foundation which is very committed to the protection of big cats, their care, their possible reintroduction as well as on the education of populations to live with cats and not against them.
The visit is very pleasant, our guide not miserly at all in information and we approach the 5 cheetah of the park very intimately, a few steps from them and in respect with them. This is a unique and memorable moment, but at a very significant cost. We are on the "experience" side of the visit and on the contribution to a project.
The restoration point is very correct qualitatively but also very expensive compared to what can be found elsewhere.
We will remember this unique and privileged encounter with cheetahs which is great.

Having already visited the Cheetah Conservation Fund the day before, which was an amazing experience and worth every cent and more….Africat consisted of a short safari to see a few cheetahs, with our guide Gideon providing us with some further information, all over in 1 ½ hrs, underwhelming! Recommend instead you do the 3 ½ hrs @ CCF for a lower cost and much better experience. Perhaps if you stay @ Okonjima you get the full treatment and perhaps even see some leopards too?

The Africat Foundation is a few minutes from the Okonjima Busch Camp Lodge and is recognized for its work in conserving some of Namibia's large carnivores. All of which can be seen during the visit.
~~~
JULL clearly explained to us the need and operation of the foundation.
Volunteer veterinarians take care of injured animals and are released with trackers for leopards and cheetahs to be able to follow them and treat them if necessary.
the best is to go there to better understand
~~~
We entered the enclosure of the three cheetahs 🐆 Jull told us about their misadventures they were found at three months old the mother disappeared they are fed every two days with 2k500 of meat each, the enclosure and huge no worries
Another enclosure a single leopard that can hunt will be released.
~~~
Ps I no longer remember the first names of these magnificent beasts.
~~~
2h to 1h30 visit, be curious and attentive

While our youngest couldn't go on all of the activities, this lodge and preserve is really something special. Got to track leopards and spend an hour with two females and a cub. The lodge has a nice curio space, Food was excellent, and you could watch all the animals from your bed. We had a View Room, and I would highly recommend. Lare windows and a deck allow antelope, jackel and many bird viewing. Also saw the AfriCat Foundation and few remaining cheetahs. They have really done a lot for the species.

This place is amazing. They rehab leopards and cheetahs so they can be released back into the wild. The facility has several tours you can take if you stay with them. However day visitors have only one tour available, the one we took. On that tour, which comes with the entry fee for the park, you will get to see recovering cheetahs in their natural habitat and be educated about the animals and the work of the foundation. The guide also talks about wild cat behaviour and measures farmers take to limit interactions their cattle sheep and goats with wild cats. More often than not, the animals at AfriCat were shot for creating problems for farmers. The reserve is located south of Otjiwarongo on the way to Okahandja

I chose this accommodation due to the optional activities they provide in the private game reserve.
I selected a standard room rather than the view rooms, which are slightly larger and set well apart form each other. I assumed the standard rooms would be attached to the main lodge, but was so wrong. We had an individual chalet, with amazing views over the savannah, and a small seating area outside our chalet to sit, read and view wildlife. The chalet was not overlooked by other rooms. Whilst there was no air con, the fans were more than adequate to keep the room cool and fresh.
The meals were taken in the 'Barn', a large, airy building, overlooking the small waterhole and savannah. The dinner menu was limited, with 2 main course options for meat eaters, and one vegetarian option. This was absolutely not a problem for us, and the food was excellent. This was complimented by superb service from the staff.
Breakfast was buffet style, and provided hot and cold options. Can thoroughly recommend the pancakes! As we were travelling in a quiet month, there was a greater feeling of exclusivity.
The activities available were of the same level of excellence as the accommodation. We did a leopard tracking trip, in the afternoon, which incorporated sundowners overlooking the reserve. All well planned and enjoyable. Our guide was knowledgeable and found two leopard for us to see as well as a bonus rhino!
We also did a morning drive which was just myself, my husband and our guide. Our guide, John, responded to our interests and the things we were keen to see rather than simply rushing around to see the 'big' game. It was so much fun!
My only regret is that we spent only 2 nights there as I would have liked to do more!

Would you consider to visit Africat, please be aware not all activities they offer are available for day visitors, but only for guests staying overnight at their lodge. This includes long game drives, leopard tracking, rhino tracking or pangolin tracking.

As for a day visit, you can go on a short cheetah viewing + information talks about what they do and how they do it.

On their beginning, the foundation goal was to relocate wild animals found in farmland. Afterwards they change strategy to rescue only cheetah cubs for their release on the reserve when they became adults. However, by governmentmal decision on 2020, non governmental organizations are not allowed to rescue wild animals, so currently the foundation does not rescue wild animals anymore and focuses only on education programs so people can coexist with wild animals.

The entry cost (730 nambian dollars as per dec 2023) is to be seen as a one time donation to contribute on their mission.

If you are interested in finding out more about these big cats Africat is a useful place to stop. The Cheetahs that are visible to the public are actually in captivity because most have been saved from private owners / zoos and hence are unable to survive on their own. The small 4X4 guided tour in the enclosures allows you to get really close to the felines and the guide provides you with interesting background about them. However this is not a safari type excursion because the enclosure is « small » by Namibian standards. The farm also breeds « Sheep Dogs » that are trained to keep Cheetahs and other predators away from herds. The farm has a cafeteria and shop with a nice terrace. We did not visit other Cheetah foundations and hence cannot offer a comparison.
