One of the Best Museums encompassing the history of the Revolutionary war.
Information that are not in school books.

I wanted to see this museum from the time it opened and finally had the opportunity in February. There were many engaging exhibits which I thoroughly enjoyed but overall I left feeling slightly disappointed. There didn't seem to be any 'meat' to the presentations, but there was a lot of verbiage. The target audience seemed to be school age children or people with very little knowledge of the American Revolution. In particular, one thing bothered me. Since this was the museum of the revolution, where was the discussion about colonists that remained loyal to the Crown, or colonists who either just wanted to be left alone, or who changed sides depending on which army was nearby? The American Revolution was not just colonists against the Crown, it was also neighbor against neighbor and we need to take that lesson to heart.

The Washington Field tent alone is worth seeing and the way it is presented is extremely well-done. Why do I give it only four stars instead of five?
While among the better museums in the area, it falls short in terms of the number of artifacts actually displayed. There is much to read within a well-organized, engaging presentation, but the lack of artifacts is why it isn't an A-rated "museum" and it often feels more like a very high-end "visitors center" with a small number of artifacts tacked on to make it a "museum". This is the same mistake that Gettysburg made when they built a new visitor center that actually displays fewer objects than the old center it was meant to replace.
The lack of a dedicated interpretation of the prison ships (HMS Jersey and others) is a major miss since more patriots died there (11,000+) than in all battles combined. In a future renovation, a section on the Jersey could be added to the existing Privateer ship display by placing it the hull below deck to allow visitors to feel the sense of being imprisoned there.
I like that it covered other aspects of the war (Indian involvement, foreign politics, etc.) and not as "battle focused" which is handled better by other museums at various battlefields. It allows one to get the bigger picture without getting bogged down.
The gift shop needs a refresh as they didn't have many unique colonial-themed items from around the area. They should take a page from Mount Vernon's amazingly varied inventory and displays.
I enjoyed my visit and recommend it for visitors, but not on days with school trips or in the summer. The museum's layout is simply not meant for large, loud groups and is best visited on weekdays in the off-season (winter) for a more enjoyable experience.

If you like history, you will like this museum. Well documented and well explained. Certainly critical enough, because it's about of important parts of American history.

A place where history comes alive! Some of the items they have on display are incredible. It’s mind-boggling that many of them have survived over 200 years let alone brought together in a single collection.
Big shout out to Scott who we later found out was actually the president of the museum. He was walking around answering questions and explaining the deep history behind some of his favorite items. That’s the kind of passion you hope for in any museum you visit!
Highly recommend, 10/10

Great perspective of the revolution's impact on our country long after the war was over. Interactive moments and the movies were quite informative.

Came to the museum for a grad school alumni event. The staff were friendly and guided us through the museum to the event space and then allowed us to view one of the many exhibits. Can't wait to return with my son in the near future.

We went on Wed Nov 22, 2023. Not sure what to expeect, and going with family who are fairly hard to please. We all had a great time. We looked around a little, then came downstairs to view the Washington War Tent. Definitely a must see, as it's got a nice story about our first president. Then we finished viewing the upstairs exhibits, and I really enjoyed how they brought the days of the Revolution alive with stories, videos, artifacts and models. I was surprised to learn quite a few new facts about the Revolution. We spent about 2 hours there, and didn't even notice the time go by. I could spent some more time there, but we had another appointment and had to leave. This is one of the places which really makes history fun.
Tip: Take a picture of the program for the day at the bottom of the stairs, so you can refer to it later.

The museum is really well done. Traveled with myself and two friends who are all trained historians, we all felt it was visually appealing, informative, and honest. Displays are a bit busy at times and a lot to read, but the information is good, the exhibits are well thought out, and a narrative was created. We enjoyed it and would recommend for anyone visiting Philadelphia!

There are a few parking garages within walking distance. We parked at the below ground parking garage at the National Constitution Center and walked there via Betsy Ross House. We hit the City Tavern afterwards. Have fun.

I am not sure if you can bring food in a backpack. I would call and ask. We ate at a restaurant after we visited the museum. There are a lot of places right in the area. Enjoy!

Would this museum be interesting for a 7 year old?
Are there any interactive activities for that age group?
Britt
Binghamton, NY56 bidrag
If your child enjoys history then yes. However there are few interactive activities. It is mostly artifacts with descriptions to read and learn about. There are lots of knowledgeable tour guides and some films. This is a museum not a play center.

We walked, did uber and used public transportation which were all easy. Those I would recommend. We saw lots of parking garages and there was some street parking. Don't know how much they cost though.

The best place to park is on 2nd Street. If you travel down Chestnut Street toward the Delaware River (no choice - one way) make a right on Chestnut Street. The parking garage is about mid-block across from the City Tavern. It's then about a 2 block walk to the museum.

Do I really need to buy a timed ticket ahead of time? I plan to visit on Sunday morning, but I'm not sure how many people are coming along so I don't want to buy tickets I don't need. Also why can you buy tickets for 9:30 if the museum opens at 10:00 am?
MrSaturn64
Philadelphia, PA349 bidrag
Since it's on a weekend very early on, yes, I would absolutely get an advance ticket. You may not need it, but it's still better to have it than to need it.
As for the other people in the group, youse can figure that out yourselves.
As for the 9:30 thing, why the hell not?
