The North End is Boston's second neighborhood and as such has its own churches, homes and even Burying Ground. Of the five colonial burying grounds in Boston, this is the second oldest after King's Chapel Burying Ground. It is also the second most notable burying ground on the Freedom Trail after Granary, not because of the citizens there, although there are many notable Bostonians, but rather the role the hill played in the Battle of Bunker Hill. British batteries were staged here and both combatants and citizens watched the battle from the hill. Today you still get a good view of Charleston and the Bunker Hill Monument from the ground. The other interesting part of the ground is it is a green spot in an otherwise heavily developed North End. You see this from the bridge to Charleston as well as the Bunker Hill Monument. Finally the setting of the cemetery on the ridge with views of Old North Church and surrounding buildings make this a great ground for photos much like Granary Burying Grounds. Finally, the grounds do hold a number of notable Bostonians, most of who were most influential in the North End, such as the Mathers pastors to Second Church in the North End and Robert Newman, the sexton of Old North Church who hung the lanterns for Paul Revere to see the night of his famous ride.

On the Freedom Trail and a short walk from the North End Church and Paul Revere statue, this historic and very old cemetery from 1659 has graves of Cotton and Increase Mather (Puritan ministers of the Salem witch trials), Black Freemasonry founder Prince Hall, people who were part of the Boston Tea Party and Revolutionary War, Robert Newman, one of two men believed to have hung the lanterns in the Old North Church tower on the night of April 18, 1775.
There were trees and it was peaceful, not spooky. The interesting thing I found was the listing of the age of the people who died on the tombstone instead of having to do the math in your head. When you see that a woman was 20 years old when she died, you can't help but wonder what happened and what her story was.
There were many old tombstones, but it was hard or impossible to read the information on many since they were blackened/mossy/worn away by the ages.

We stumbled upon this cemetery while doing the trail. There were so many old headstones. Some you couldn’t even read the names.

Located on the way to Charlestown, this peaceful cemetary is steeped in Boston's historic past. During the Revolution, the British troops used these gravestones for target practice. The grave markers and inscriptions are fascinating to read. The builder of the USS Constitution (Edmund Hartt) and founder of the black Masonic Order (Prince Hall) are interred here.

The last stop on the Freedom Trail before you go over the Bridge into Charlestown. This is one of the older cemeteries in Boston. Paul Newman the Old North Church Sexton who hung the lanterns is buried here. The Puritan ministers Increase and Cotton Mather are buried here as well. Supposedly the British used the headstones for target practice ahead of the battle of Bunker (Breed's) Hill

A really interesting look at the history of Boston. Reading grave stone inscriptions can be a facinating look into the past.

We wandered around the grounds here after breakfast, while waiting on the other stops along the freedom trail in the north end to open. It was cool to see how old some of the headstones were and learn about how people lived and died in the area. It’s quite a picturesque part of the city as well.

Copp's Hill is the last stop on the Freedom Trail before heading north over the river to Charleston. Being away from the bustle of downtown, this cemetery seemed a bit more dignified and peaceful than some of the others earlier on the Trail, even as many of the old headstones are heavily weathered and tilted.
While there, look toward the north and, foliage permitting, you'll be able to see the USS Constitution and USS Cassin Young about a third of a mile away, across the river at the Navy Yard.

The Copp's Hill Burying Ground (which is along the Freedom Trail) is a decent example of Colonial era cemeteries and how early Boston residents lived & died. In addition to all the headstones, there are historic markers explaining how headstone carvers made their living and the backgrounds of some of the early Boston residents. A useful brief stop if you're already walking along the Freedom Trail.

I visited the Copp's Hill Burying Ground in November 2021 as part of doing the Freedom Trail from start to finish. This is the third cemetery on the Freedom Trail with the first two being the Granary Burying Ground and the King's Chapel Burial Ground. I think it is worth a quick stop to visit and take in the 360 view. It is on the way to Charlestown. Out of the three cemeteries on the Freedom Trail, the Granary Burying Ground is the most interesting because a lot of famous people are buried there. But the Copp's Hill Burying Ground has the best view. I would walk around for 10 minutes and then continue on with the Freedom Trail walking to Charlestown.
