The Na Aina Botanical Gardens are a must-see site for all visitors and locals in Kauai. Not only is the beauty of nature astounding on its own, but it is an even more enhanced experience when explained by the knowledgeable and friendly guides. Our guide was exceptionally well-versed in not only the numerous different botanical aspects of the gardens, but also in the details of the history and origins of the owners, statues, houses, and entire operation and background of the gardens. It was an awesome and awe-inspiring experience I will always remember. It will be at the top of my list of places to visit when I return to Kauai.

Stuck in the 70s. More about the sculptures, which all look dated and hokey. We did the self guided walking tour, surprised that none of the trees and vegetation was labeled. Was told by one of the docents only 4 plants on the property were native to Hawaii. Sad.

My wife and I enjoyed the self-guided tour aspect of these gardens. The ability to roam free and view everything was definitely worth it! I suggest a camera or good cell phone camera since there are so many amazing flowers and fauna. We also appreciated the docents around the spice area of the gardens that taught us about different trees, herbs, and berries.

Just wow! We were so impressed with all the plants and the views at the end. Our most favorite was the pool (fresh water with it’s own filtering/cleaning system). We learned that only staff and volunteers are allowed to swim in that pool. Definitely a place to come back to, such a tranquil area. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly/warm demeanor.

We did the 2 1/2 hour walk through the garden to the beach and then back to the top where we went through the Formal Garden. There were only 5 people in our group so it was really nice and personal and we got to spent an extra hour with Luane and Roger.
We spent lots of time walking /talking/ listening to the details of the plants in the garden.
This was a great walk with great volunteers.
Highly recommend!

This botanical garden is amazing. You have the option of touring via narrated tram that stops wherever you would like to have a photo op. Beautiful , beautiful with lovely bronze statues that enhance each uniquely planned garden. You really can't miss this one. Gorgeous!!

For us on the three hour cart tour there was heavy focus on bronze statues which the owners’ largely commissioned from the mainland. I was hoping for more information about the garden how they went about starting it, how they brought plants in, how they maintain it, etc and I hope to see more of the land. It seems most of it is actually commercial forest. Also I was hoping for ocean views which were only available for a brief stop- Most of the areas we toured were inland. Whimsical and creative, but Not particularly to my taste. But we were introduced to a fantastic variety of new plants and truly enjoyed that.

On 6/28/21 my husband and I participated in "The Beach Walk Formal Gardens &
Kaluakai Beach" tour, which is offered on Friday mornings. Reservations are required, and we made them by phone a couple of weeks before our trip to Kauai. We used Apple Pay to pay for our tours in the gift shop when we arrived. This experience was well worth the $55 each.
Our guide, Julie, was knowledgeable and friendly. She moved us along at a brisk but manageable pace. Our group of eight adults was the perfect size for everyone to be able to hear and see. The path itself is gently to moderately sloped with rope handrails placed in steeper or more narrow areas for extra support. Walking shoes are suggested; my husband and I both wore Keens and found them appropriate. There were a couple of different opportunities for restroom breaks in modern facilities during the tour.
We loved that this experience was more hands-on than we expected! Julie passed around many things for us to feel, smell (like deliciously fragrant leaves from cinnamon and allspice trees), and taste (mountain apples picked straight off the tree were a refreshing treat!).
There are SO MANY wonderful things about this tour I haven't even touched on. We visit Kauai every couple of years and this is one of my top two excursions ever. I look forward to returning someday for other experiences at Na 'Aina Kai like "The Trek" and "The Bird Tour." If you're considering a visit to Na 'Aina Kai, GO!

The Garden is open for business! We did the 3 hour self guided tour of the formal garden today. Reservations are required, online or by phone, $20 each. Docents are stationed around the garden and they are so knowledgeable and happy to share their knowledge about the plants and the history of the garden. All are volunteers who completed the 9 week training course. The formal garden is only a small part of the entire campus, we plan to see it all when it is fully open. For now, the complete tour is available on a few days a week on the ride/stroll tour. This garden has some unique and special plants along with other more traditional ones. The design of the property, water features, bronze sculptures and history behind each section make the magic. The gift shop has some nice garden related items worth seeing as well. My favorite day on the island!

Na Aina Kai is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the US. The Kauai climate makes an ideal place for such a garden. This garden was started in 1979 on a barren piece of land on Kauai's north shore. It is home to a variety of trees and native plants. The garden is dotted with many bronze sculptures from a variety of artists. In the 15 years since the last visit, the garden and tree plantings have matured beautifully. There is a small gift shop with a number of crafts from local artists. If you enjoy gardens, this is one to see.

Traffic can sometimes be heavy heading back towarsds the boat between 4 and 6
It would normally take 30 to 35 min to dive from Lihue to the gardens.
If i read your question right you are going in the morning. You MUST make a reservation. Just call them directly. Leave the boat at 8 am. Stop at Java Kai in Kapaa on the one. It is a local coffee and pastry spot. Very good.
Plan for a 930 or 10 tour. Are you bringing kids?
It is really a great spot to visit. As well it may be raining so plan ahead and watch the weather forecast. They Also have a nice gift shop.
Have fun. Parking is easy. It will be on your right hand side when driving. And you turn down a road about a half mile to the entrance.

While I don't actually know - the property is "high" and so water would drain off quickly.

I don't believe so. Plus there's no way to see the entire place just by walking. Highly recommend the Stroll/ride tour. Cover way more ground, and the guides are really knowledgeable.

do you know if infants (less than a year old) are allowed inside? I have a 9 month old.

Sorry for the late response. I would think that infants would be allowed on the tram. You could always call and ask them. They are very friendly and helpful.

Our kids are 11 and 9; do you think they would be just as thrilled with the Family Tour as the younger kids (ages 6 and under) so often mentioned in reviews of this tour?

Not so much. But a lot depends on your family, including the young folks' attention spans and their interests. The children's playground and Navajo village was lovely, interesting as one stop on our tour, but it might not hold the attention of active older children for very long. You don't want them to feel "stuck on the fenced in playground with the babies" at that age, when there is so much more all around them they will want to "go see." I might recommend the strolling tour for the same shorter time frame, more 9-11 year old exercise, and more self-determination in exploration, especially if they are boys. The stroll-and-ride covers the whole property and offers constant variety - many fascinating and humorous sculptures, tastings of edibles, additional structures, magical forests, and an "albatross landing field," as well as 'gardens and a playground.' You do spend as much time off the vehicle as on it. This the tour which I actually took, and one I would feel comfortable choosing for my two sons when they were those ages. But it is a full three hours, which can feel like a long time. If you all are really active, pretty steady on your feet and have a little hiking experience, your family might enjoy the beach walk. I'd recommend calling the visitor center first and discussing your children's particular interests before you make your reservation. The staff are hospitable and perceptive. They keep their groups quite small. All guides do vary activities, and they provide plenty of personal attention. Going early, in the cool of the morning, on the first tour of the day, can also help your guide to personalize the experience for your children. I hope you all enjoy Na Aina Kai, whichever tour you select!
