Great views at the Waipi’o Valley Lookout. Pretty easy to get to. Parking spots are limited. The walk down is a bit steep and uneven so not ideal for anyone in a wheelchair or otherwise unstable on your feet.

Waipo Valley can only be visited by locals but Waipo Valley lookout is open to all visitors. It is located about 30 mins North of Hilo and is a very easy drive. The views from the lookout is pleasant but not spectacular.
From the parking lot, you will need to take a steep walk to get to the lookout. If someone has mobility issues, then this will be a challenge.
If you want to get to the Waipo valley itself then locals do take you there via a shuttle. The cost is about $75/person (though I am not sure about that)
I will recommend it if its convenient

Definitely a must do IMO ! The view is absolutely stunning . It was quite a drive from Waikaloa but we’ll worth it! We took a little picnic and easily found a spot at the covered picnic area. The drive or hike down to the valley was closed to tourists, which we weren’t planning to do anyways. On the way back we stopped by one of the fresh fruit stands to get some fresh coconut which was a fun little break as well!

This was a spontaneous stop while driving around the Big Island, and boy, am I glad we saw this! The photos don't show the scale; the lookout gave a clear view of the valley. Warning: steep climb down to the lookout from the parking lot, although there is a railing along the walkway to help. Restrooms available, too.
Beautiful, serene vista - really feels like you're at the end of the world.

Don’t pay attention to posts that say the road to the Lookout is closed…it’s open as of 7/5/2023! This is the best way to see the valley from the ground (helicopter ride is best!!)
We saw several notes about the road being closed but took the risk to head up there and it didn’t disappoint!!
Make sure to stop in historic Honokaa and have lunch!!

Decided to drive from Hilo to Kona the long way around and take the scenic route on top of that. Stopped by this lookout and was really happy with my choice. There was some construction blocking off the parking lot but there is street parking and the view once you get down there is superb. They even have bathrooms and picnic tables here which I thought was very nice.

The Waipi'o Lookout is just down the coast from the Polola Lookout reviewed earlier. It too offers beautiful views of the ocean and the cliffs created when Kohala Volcano (the oldest volcano on the big island) suffered a massive landslide - only from the other side.
There is a narrow, one-way path to the bottom of Waipiʻo Valley and people actually live there. The path has a sign that says "local residents only" and "4-wheel drive only". It looked like the guard at the top had a radio to ensure that vehicles only traveled in one direction at a time but I never checked.

Well worth the drive! This was my husband’s favorite view on the island. It was a little crowded when we arrived and the tiny parking lot was full so we parked along the road and walked out. The view is gorgeous!

While this lookout doesn’t take long, it is well worth the visit. The view is incredible! And pictures don’t do it justice. Please note that the walk from the parking lot to the lookout is steep and while it is a ramp, you’ll want to use the handrails and caution if you have mobility issues. The valley itself is sadly off-limits to tourists, but the history is well-represented on the markers at the lookout. We toured the whole island this trip and this was my favorite stop.

***UPDATE: These were local elderly woman who set up chairs INFRONT of the business/org tent. If the people under the tent were attempting to sell something, scowling, joining in and allowing this harassment was clearly not the way to do it. No one was attempting to descend down the valley as it was closed and everyone was respecting that.
We drove almost 2 hours to see this lookout. We were aware that the road down to the valley was closed to visitors, which was fine with us. We were in NO condition to attempt a hike. Unfortunately we had a horrible experience and were forced to leave and could not get to the lookout due to local women that sat near tents with signs. The speed limit is 20, which we were well under, but as soon as we arrived the locals started screaming and harassing us as we parked to “slow down.” And that they didn’t want us there, saying “go back home!” You literally are driving towards a cliff to park so naturally we used caution. But the women and even the guard were very rude. As we got out they continued to unnecessarily bully and demean us. We were taken back because we travel for a living and respect the land and all it’s people. As we were trying to leave, one of the women started towards our car continuously harassing us to leave their island, we felt extremely unsafe. It was extremely traumatic experience for us. Very sad that the locals at this site treat people in this manner. The area already has a guard at the location, no need for the people to be so cruel. They were very clear they did not want tourist, backpackers or even just people looking to get fresh air to enjoy the site. It was clear it wasn’t an issue of “speeding” they just didn’t want visitors there. Needless to say we will not be visiting this island in the future. One of the worst unnecessarily dangerous experiences.

Is 4WD must in order to drive into the vally or a regular jeep without 4WD is ok?
Thanks
Hi, while visiting Waipi'o Valley, we'd also like to take a look at Hi'ilawe Falls from afar. Since I have read that locals don't appreciate tourists on their land down in the valley, I'd like to know how far (or if at all) down the valley we'd really have to get in order to see the falls. I keep finding images of a "Hi'ilawe Falls Lookout" with a dirt road full of parking ATV's that seems to sit on the ridgeline above the valley but I can't find out where exactly it is. Such a look would basically suit our needs. Thanks in advance.

How is the drive from hilo? Do you need a 4x4 just to get to the lookout? We don't plan on driving down to the valley. Thank you!

Drive is about 45 mins from Hilo. No 4x4 required for the lookout. Have fun!

Aloha,
I am sorry I can't answer your question. However, I did find this local provider (Horseback above Waipio:Waipio Ridge Stables) who may be able to respond to you.

Could someone please let me know long it takes to drive from Waikoloa Village (Hilton) to this look out area? And could we sit at the lookout and eat our picnic lunch? is there a picnic area nearby?
Thanks so much!!

From there to Marriott was about 90 minutes or so but depends on traffic. It is just two lane roads and the speeds are no more than 40-45 on average. There were picnic tables on the top and was covered. We did not trek down to the bottom as we did not have a 4WD. IN town, there were a bunch of eateries. There is one that the food was ok but everyone goes for the portugese donuts called masalada or something like that, Was very good. Worth a stop. Tex Drive IN...

Is the Valley still closed? We will be going in two weeks and would love to hike down the valley.
No. Maybe by March 13.
