Lookouts and drive ups. Beautiful sights to see along the way. Swimming and fishing stopping spots. Near towns to find food etc.

Gorgeous views while driving the Cherohala Skyway and plenty of hiking opportunities as well as opportunities for viewing various water falls.
We stayed at the Indian Boundary Campground, about 16 miles from Tellico Plains. It's in a great location around a beautiful lake, a large campground area that is well-managed, and a hiking trail around the lake that offers many great views. Note that the campground has electric connections but not water at the sites themselves. However, there are a multitude of water spigots around the campground loops making it easy to get more water if you run dry. There are also plentiful trash receptacles around the campground making it easy to keep the area clean.

The Cherokee National Forest is a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty of nature. It is a cool sweep of green in the warmer months. In the Fall, the colorful displays of autumn leaves are just gorgeous. There are lots of beautiful sweeping forest and mountain views to enjoy and photograph.

La Cherokee National Forest si trova lungo il confine del Tennessee con la Carolina del Nord ed ha una regione settentrionale ed una sezione meridionale. E' molto bella da percorrere anche solo in auto, perchè offre scorci panoramici molto suggestivi e scenografici, con fiumi ed un lago, che consentono delle bellissime foto ed offre molti percorsi escursionistici.

Going to Harrah's Casino in Cherokee NC grom Tennessee,my wife and I had to go thru the Cherokee National forest. We stopped numerous times along the way to view dome of the beautiful laked and rapid river. The mountains were fresh the water was breathtaking.

I thought it was beautiful and nice trail around lake. I thought the bathrooms were clean, but seemed small with 1 sink and 1 shower in loop A. Too far to get water as few pumps. I liked that you had plenty of space. The thing that ruined our camping was the rule of hammocks being between your timbers and I didn't really get it until the camp host explained I was breaking rule. So mostly Impossible and they should just say no hammocks. Guess you can tie your kayak anywhere. 10 year old camping and no electronics and no bike, so he really was enjoying the hammock. I would look in area for something that works better for our family.

My husband and i stayed at Indian Boundary campsite for two nights. The area was not crowded since it was a tues. and Wed. The bathrooms and showers were well taken care of. The hostess in Loop A was very nice and helpful. Beach area was clean. The site had electricity we used a tent but was able to plug in some things. Well return.

It had been probably 25 years since I camped at Little Oak. When I returned, I found a campground that is one of the best I've used. Little Oak is maintained at a high level, and has some of the cleanest restrooms I've found at a campground that is not privately owned. The sites are situated along the shoreline of South Holston Lake, and every site appears to be clean and cleared of debris, etc.
On this recent visit the campground hosts went out of their way to help me. I was staying on Poplar Loop, and had forgotten to pack a small canister of gas for my burner ("got" to have that morning coffee!!). When I asked the closest store that would carry it, they pulled out a canister and sold it to me for what they said they paid. They saved me a LONG drive out, and I had my morning coffee!
The campground is well patrolled, and things were very quiet before 10 p.m. I arrived on Labor Day, but there were surprisingly few campers out (I guess they had just left that morning). I enjoyed a GREAT visit, and will be going back soon.

This is one of Tennessee's best gems that there is. Several waterfalls can be found quite easily, it has a campground (Rock Springs) great for day trips and camping as it has an actual "swimming hole". For me it was a trip back in time as my parents used to go camping there when I was young but I never knew where it was.

There is a nice beach. This walking and biking trails are well maintained. I don't have that much good to say about the campground. The bath houses are well maintained and clean by campground standards. I have camped and State, County and Federal campgrounds for over 30 years and never once have I been met at the gate buy a roadblock of four law enforcement vehicles. Quite clearly there's a safety and or security problem at Indian Boundary Campground. This happened late Friday night and all cars were stopped and checked for license registration insurance etc. There were representatives from both the Cherokee National Forest Police and Monroe County Sheriff's Department. Over the course of our stay there we were confronted by Park volunteers. There's a full page list of rules for the campground most of which are standard in most campgrounds and some are unique to this one. Rules are rules and that is fine but these were sparsely enforced. In particular someone there has a particular beef with hammocks. While they need to be within the campground timbers other things such as tarps and clothes lines could be strung anywhere. My summary would be this is a great place to visit for the day but I do not recommend camping overnight.

What route is considered the "scenic drive" thru the Cherokee National Forest?
What trails for a day hike would be closest to Gatlinburg?

I will be visiting coming in from the area of southern virginia, coming from kingsport tn.
just wondering where is the entrance to the forest from that direction and are there good attractions in the northern areas of the forest, sullivan and johnson county, tn areas???
this will be a day trip but might consider staying at a hotel near kingsport area if we dont get finished sight seeing early enough.
suggestions for this part of the forest??

Looks like we picked the wrong week to come there. July19th It is supposed to be 95 Monday and Tuesday. Do you think it will be any cooler in the Forest at all? We will probably take the scenic drive which is 26 miles.

I agree it is always cooler in the forest, I have a cabin up in the north Ga. mountains and find that it is definitely cooler. I liked The lost Creek Campground and Jacks Creek, they are both primitive but on the creek and dense canopy. Good luck and enjoy.

Hi, Can anyone advise where I could find a decent trail map in order to plan ahead for a September trip? I want to understand if there is anyway of doing a section of the Appalachian trail and then creating a loop back using a different trail? Or if this is not possible what the most scenic day hikes in the area are. Any help appreciated!

Call North Georgia Outfitters in Ellijay, Ga. They are super knowledgable in all things concerning the AT. Ask for the owner, Travis, who has actually hiked the entire length of the AT. They sell awesome items, including maps and will be a wealth of Information for you. And I am sure, he has been to the very trail you are looking for since his business and home are located close by.
