FORT BUILT TO DEFEND WISCASSET DURING THE WAR OF 1812
jun. 2017

Don't bypass this - only a short drive from Route One.

This 1808 octagonal fort is a wooden marvel and has a fascinating history. Muskets were fired from the bottom loopholes, and cannons from the top. It's so different from the typical coastal cement fort. Its location on Sheepscot River is beautiful and it's a great place to have a picnic.

Beautiful historic site, perfect for picnic or taking in views
sep. 2020
This is quite the hidden gem, a fort designed to stand and protect on the coast of Maine that is tucked away in Edgecomb. Bring a lunch and enjoy a picnic by the water. The inside of the Fort was closed, due to COVID-19, but plenty to see between the very cool honeycomb-esque fort, all the history outside, including the bunkers. There are some spectacular views and it is peaceful and relaxation - ironic for a place that is associated with war and protection.

We walked to Fort Edgecomb. The views of the water and the fort itself are beautiful. There are many picnic tables to eat at. There are bathroom facilities onsite but were closed when we were there.

Hidden gem of a Fort
jun. 2020
Stopped during the Covid outbreak and the Fort building was closed. However, the Park was well maintained with terrific views and shady spots to relax. The outer works were easily walked thru and I will return again as soon as the building is open. This is a great place for kids to stretch their legs as they are almost always in sight. Well worth the short stop!

Unchanged since 1808
jun. 2020 • Alene
This is a beautiful site. Built in 1808 to defend against an attack from England, the structure still stands unchanged. There are several picnic tables and great views so take a lunch and enjoy it. I wasn’t able to park in the actual parking area but if it isn’t crowded, you can park your car and just walk the short distance to the park.

A restoration of a circa 1812-30 block house and artillery defenses established to protect key coastal cities and to project land forces against British intrusions etc... post War of 1812. Beautiful views of Sheepscott River, protecting Wiscasset, Maine and points north and south.
It must be remembered that during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, a large part of Down East, Maine was occupied by the British. This area of mid-coast Maine teens with maritime and sea battle history as well as French/British conflicts associated with the French and Indian War and further back Native American conflicts against the ever encroaching colonials.

Visit This Historic Fort To Breathe History!
aug. 2019
The fort is easily accessible via car from the Maine coast and, unless you walked down to the remote artillery sites, is easy walking. The Fort is original, including the writing scratched into the walls across 200+ years. It won’t take long to finish the self guided tour, making this an easy excursion for anyone.
