Chicago Picasso!

. . Jeg vil gerne nævne, at Picassos skulptur optrådte i flere ikoniske film - - The Blues Brothers ( 1980 ) , The Fugitive ( 1983 ) , en af mine yndlingsfilm Ferris Buellers Day Off ( 1986 ) , og i Switching Channels ( 1988 ) . Skulpturen er også et populært mødested, du vil ikke gå glip af det på Daley Plaza, og det er en stor fotoop. Nyd det!

Long after he completed the untitled monumental sculpture that commands the Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago, Pablo Picasso said it represented the head of his Afghan hound. After its unveiling in 1967, Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper columnist Mike Royko wrote: "Interesting design, I'm sure. But the fact is it has a long stupid face and looks like some giant insect that is about to eat a smaller, weaker insect." Whatever it is, the Picasso is a well known Chicago landmark, the first monumental abstract public artwork in downtown Chicago. Located at 50 West Washington Street, Standing 50 feet tall and weighing over 160 tons, the Picasso is built of Cor-Ten steel, the same material as the exterior of the Daley Center. It was assembled and constructed at the U.S. Steel Company in Gary, Indiana, and unveiled and dedicated in Daley Plaza on August 15, 1967. "A gift to the people of Chicago," Picasso said in his dedication letter, without explaining what the sculpture was intended to represent. It is known for its inviting jungle gym-like characteristics. Visitors to Daley Plaza can often be seen climbing on and sliding down the base of the sculpture.

As an impressive, unique example of the monumental public artwork by Picasso, the 50ft (15m) tall , about 150 ton, COR-TEN steel, Cubist untitled sculpture has been decorating Daley Plaza since 1967, and it is considered one of the best-known landmarks in the Loop area of Chicago.

Besides a modest fountain working in warm months, and seasonal activities (markets, festivals, Christkindlmarket, and other cultural events), The Chicago Picasso (often called The Picasso) is the only sculpture on the plaza, and it is visible at a distance from the streets and buildings, surrounding the plaza.

A lot of discussions have been going on, what this unusual monument actually represents. There were several speculations on the subject matter. One of them says, that the sculpture is the abstract presentation of the Afghan Hound dog, named Kabul -- in fact, this comment belonged to Picasso, talking about his dog and the sculpture.

I am also inclined to think, that this sculpture represents the Afghan dog, looking at people on the plaza and cars on the streets. However, the greatest virtue of the abstract art is, that it is open to interpretation, so ...

I'd like to mention, that The Picasso sculpture appeared in several iconic movies -- The Blues Brothers (1980), The Fugitive (1983), one of my favorite movies Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), and in Switching Channels (1988).

The sculpture is also a popular meeting point, you won't miss it on Daley Plaza, and it is a great photo op. Enjoy!

I think this iconic but unnamed piece represents Chicago - is Chicago. "Chicago" combines many older urban elements into a new, unique but striking and powerful metropolis. The art work is like nothing you have ever seen. And Chicago is like no other city in the world. Not particularly pretty, but strong, real, unique. An original. This is one of four large artworks (Calder, Chagall, Miro, and Picasso) w/in a few blocks of each other inside the Loop along Dearborn. Installed between 1967 and 1981, these four artworks celebrate Chicago's status as a Great City. Very walkable free experience. Very cool. The greatest artists on earth celebrating Chicago. Be proud Chicago.

Located at Daley Plaza, the great Pablo Picasso's gift to the city of Chicago was unveiled in 1967. It was the first significant public abstract work of art in the city. Initially met with great dislike, it is now more appreciated and has become an iconic landmark in Chicago's Loop. Definitely worth a look and a photo if nearby or even can be appreciated from the street as you drive by it.

I saw this Picasso sculpture while in Chicago. There was a farmer's market here while I was there, so I didn't get a great photo.

Picasso was invited to make this sculpture by the mayor of Chicago in 1967 . In front of the town hall this sculpture was built under cover , no one knew what it looks like .the inauguration took place , the cover was removed, and everyone was surprised regarding the outcome , many very disappointed.
Take a few minutes to pass by .

There are a handful of large public art installations scattered around downtown including this landmark sculpture by Pablo Picasso (1967) which is located at Daly Plaza along West Washington Street. It is a 15 metre tall Cubist sculpture that from the sides looks like fragmented sheets of metal. However, when viewed directly in front, resembles the head of an Afghan Hound.

It is an interesting public artwork worth spending a few minutes to enjoy if you plan to be in the downtown area and enjoy art and monument viewing during your travels. You will also find large scale works by Miro, Dubuffet, Chagall and Calder nearby the Chicago Picasso sculpture as well.

Just like Calder’s Flamingo, you can do a drive by and see this without spending too much time. Not sure what else there is to see about this. Maybe I didn’t research it enough beforehand, but it just wasn’t impressive when we saw it.

In the center of the open square in front of City Hall stands an untitled sculpture to the City of Chicago. Picasso, who rarely did large civic art, gave this to the city free of charge as a gift to a gangster city. The steel was manufactured near by in Gary and assembled here.

Like most public art, the untitled sculpture was hated initially. However, over time it has become a cultural icon of the city and one of the top attractions. It has appeared in numerous Chicago movies. After 55 years it is accepted as a Chicago pop icon and something I made an effort to see in the Loop.
