Beautiful state park in the mountains of north central Georgia.
Lots of beautiful sites within the park. Some on top of hills, others near the water. Bathhouse was clean and plenty of soap and paper towels. Campground host was warm and friendly. Very young rangers at check-in were shy and bearly spoke over a whisper but friendly nonetheless. Weather was unseasonably cold! Low 30’s at night for mid-October

Northern Georgia is just the place to be and Fort Mountain State Park put the nail in the coffin. The hiking trails are shaded, the overlooks are breath-taking and the lake was very pretty. I feel that there should be more markers on the trees and signs at EVERY trail intersection. I would suggest going through the week. It's hardly anyone there. You can take your time and enjoy a bit of solitude.

Stayed in a cabin for the second time. The cabins are not your typical cabin that you will find in Gatlinburg with pool tables and hot tubs. The cabins here are simple and nice. A big kitchen and living/dining area. 2 bedrooms, one on each end with 2 beds, a bathroom and access to the big screened in back porch that stretches across the length of the cabin. I'm a clean freak and the cabins are decently clean with the bathrooms a little less than I prefer. The lake and trails are awesome and beautiful. You can fish, there is a playground, beach and boat rentals. We will keep coming back here as long as it is kept us as well as it has been the last couple of years. Still hoping to see a bear. :)

We went Thanksgiving week which had quite a cold morning of about 28 degrees. We went for a hike and it was very pretty. There were many moments it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. There were other people there but not many and it wasn't crowded. Beautiful view from the observation area along the hike. We saw many birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. Definitely a better option than some of the other overcrowded parks we went to. They also had camping and mountain biking which looked fun.

My husband and I visited on Nov 7 on a beautiful sunny fall day. I know tourists head to north Georgia for the fall foliage in Oct, but I have found that the first few weeks in Nov can be colorful as well. We picked up some fried chicken and potato salad from a grocery store in Chatsworth and set out for a picnic at Ft Mountain. There are many picnic tables, some near the restrooms which were cleaner than I have ever seen before. (Walls had been painted, sinks worked properly, plenty of bath tissue in each stall, and clothes changing areas built on the side of the building for swimmers in the summer). We hiked the trail to the scenic overlook platforms. A small kid yells out "look, a bald eagle" and yep, it circled overhead for about 1 minute then headed to the east. White head, white tail, just beautiful. I have lived in GA all my life but never saw a bald eagle here before. For another scenic overlook, don't miss Cool Springs. It is a very short walk to the platform for a gorgeous mountain view. The trees were so colorful here. My reason for not giving 5 stars is because of the lack of parking. We were prevented from driving past a certain point until the cars cleared out. We were told cars were parked on the grass, etc, so they temporarily closed the road. Nice that the park is that popular these days, but surely additional parking areas can be constructed. We encountered the same parking issue at Cloudland Canyon, except that they would not even let us enter the park. Come on, Georgia, make room for your visitors!

Great and beautiful place! I was there for a trail race and the staff even gave my wife and I the code to enter a camping area to use the showers after the race!

We spent 5 glorious days at Fort Mountain Park in Georgia. Two hours away from Atlanta International Airport and you are in a different world. We stayed in cabin 14. The cabin was clean, with all modern conveniences. We were notified that they had issues with WIFI, but we came prepared with board games and downloaded movies. The people at the visitor center were nice and helpful. Everything was well organized. Your could even buy essentials there. Two bears came roaming near the cabin. Great experience

The cottages in the park are an excellent place to stay. This park has a lot of trails, but the crown goes to the Gahuti Trail. I enjoyed it but was exhausted at the end. This trail could be easier for a younger and fitter person. It is a must-do for anyone visiting this park.

Because we were on a tight schedule, we visited here in the morning when we really couldn't see much because of the fog. However, the drive on the mountain roads getting here are worth the trip even if the views from the park are not spectacular. Make sure you have plenty of gas before you go as there is none close to the park. Also, don't rely on the gps signal on your cell phone to navigate here as you will lose it & not have it for many minutes at a time. Make sure you have a paper highway map if you are not from the area.

We would love to take our travel trailer to the campground, but are wondering about the drive up the mountain to the park. The map shows the road twisting & turning with a switchback. Any feedback would be appreciated

We'd like to use the fireplace while staying in the cabin. Where is the best place to purchase firewood locally?

We purchased firewood from the store in the park. It was, however, very green. We bought a couple of packs from WalMart to supplement. We had to have a well established HOT fire to burn the green wood. I think they are like most parks and ask that you only buy firewood from them though.

Can park passes be purchased at the gate or do we need to purchase them online ahead of time? Are there kiosks that accept cash? I know that there have been some changes to admission since Covid-19 but their website is unclear.

I was there 2 weeks ago and they are accepting cash for sure. Annual pass is one of the options, so I believe they are issuing passes as well. I think they prefer you pay online in advance, but you don’t have to.

what campsites are closest to hear or to see the rushing water of the creek for a tent or small camper site?
CandiceG666
Rome, GA10 bidrag
There is a creek side campground that has primitive campsites. The main campground allows tents and pop up campers as well. However, the lake is the most visible to campsites. Rushing creeks can be found on the hikes. Be sure to stop in at the camp store. The rangers can help you find the perfect site. There is also a map on the website.
We plan to stay at campsite 45. Does anyone know if you can take kayak and things is the water easy to access from that site
We also have booked site 45. How was it? Easy access to water? How bout bathhouses?

How are the roads going to the campground? Any majorly steep hills? We will be pulling our camper.

They are mostly gradual and no crazy curves. Large campers are there all the time.

Hey,
Planning to go camping in Fall. Do you think first week in November or first week in October is better for fall colors relatively speaking. Ideally it would be good to go middle to late October, but unfortunately, the other weekends in October are booked.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Wow...that is a really tough one due to weather and how much rain that does effect the leaves! If I could choose October would be my preference. Longer day light and prehaps the leaves will present themselves in a wild colour palette for you. Have fun! Suggest to consider Vogel State Park..or Black Mountain there colour will be outstanding.

Did they have running water in the pioneer campsites and what about bathrooms?

We are planning an April trip to Fort Mountain State Park and are wondering about the Hwy 52 drive between Chatsworth and the park. We drive a 2009 F150 (4.6L) and pull a 2010 trailer, between 4,500-5000 lbs loaded. Just a little nervous about the elevation. This will be our first “mountain” camping trip.
Hi Jean. The drive from Chatsworth to the park is 8 miles. During that 8 miles you will gain 1,739 ft. of elevation. Some sections are stepper than others and there are paved and gravel pull offs along the way. We look forward to seeing you in April!
