St. Sophia is located in downtown Ohrid, secluded within curving streets and many old houses around. It dates back to 10th cent, built in Byzantine style during the 1st Bulgarian Empire and even was a seat of Bulgarian Patriarch.
Small entrance fee, amazing 11-14 c frescoes inside.

As it’s located in the centre of the old town you are likely to come across this church. It’s well worth paying the small entrance fee to go inside. The grounds are well maintained and home to a family of tortoises.

This church has been built by the first Bulgarian empire (from which also the fortress originates) and keeps also icons, paintings inside. Moreover, you can enjoy three turtles walking outside in the garden and nice atmosphere in the town around.

Positives: A very beautiful Byzantine well-preserved church, in a very beautiful garden, easily accessible.
Negatives: 3 euro ticket to the church...seriously unacceptable. A souvenir stall in the churchyard...both of which indicate a lack of respect for the space..

Entrance is 150 dmk and you are inside. When we were there there was a large German group and the guide had a lot to say plus he just stood there where everyone wanted to take a photo. There are chairs so you can take your time to look around. It is light and not as dark as other churches.

The Church (in some sources - the Cathedral) of Hagia Sophia (aka Tsrkva Sveta Sophia or Church of Saint Sophia) in North Macedonian Ohrid is my next sacred discovery of this amazing city. Finding it couldn’t be easier: if you take the monument to St. Naum of Ohrid as the starting point (only the lazy don’t know this sculpture on the embankment), then you need to paddle only about 400 meters with your fins in a westerly direction along the shore of Lake Ohrid. And may you be happy!!!
I read that the Ohrid Church of Hagia Sophia is one of the few surviving Byzantine cathedral churches from the 11th century in North Macedonia (and probably in the Balkans, too). But let’s decide right away, “on the shore,” as they say: over the past TEN CENTURIES, the number of rebuildings, alterations, restorations, etc., which modified the original appearance of the temple, was so great that the variability of opinions of gurus from history, archeology, architecture fluctuates simply fantastic within limits with decent “backlash”.
I am also an expert in the sacred architecture of the countries of the Balkan Peninsula, therefore, speaking about what I saw in Ohrid, I will rely on the opinion of more advanced scientists “lemmings”. Personally, I like the version according to which the history of the construction of the Church of Sophia of Ohrid can be divided into several main stages. The basis for the construction of the temple, according to this version, sends us back to the 9th century, namely, during the reign of Prince Boris I, who ruled Bulgaria in 852-889.
Moreover, it is suggested that this temple already existed in the 9th century as the city’s cathedral!!! According to a number of authors, it is permissible to include the construction of the galleries of the second tier and the eastern chapels above the altar as one of the later stages of the construction of the cathedral, dating them to the reign of Archbishop Gregory II and the construction of the exonarthex (at that time - 1317).
A number of researchers, describing the Church of Sophia of Ohrid as a domed basilica with four side compartments covered with lower vaults, believe that the period of the first construction stage is separated from the subsequent ones (including the time of construction of the eastern facades of the upper chapels and the northern walls of the northern chapel) much shorter and acceptable talk about the 12th century.
The most categorical scientists claim that the entire complex of Ohrid's Church of St. Sophia, with the exception of the narthex, is an integral structure, completed in one construction period at the beginning of the 11th century as a domed basilica. After restoration and archaeological work carried out in the 50s of the last century, a version has finally been put forward that the church building basically belongs to the era of Tsar Samuel (let me remind you, the latter ruled Bulgaria in 980-1014). And all subsequent fundamental changes in the appearance of the temple (for example, a two-tier narthex and a bell tower) were probably made in the 11th-13th centuries.
At the same time, the construction work is associated with the personality of Archbishop Ohrid Lev, who sat on the throne in the period 1035-1036, and his predecessor at the Ohrid See - Archbishop John. An even more original version seems to be that the current temple was built on the foundation of the Ohrid Cathedral, DESTROYED in the first decade of the 6th century during the invasion of barbarians who brought the early Slavs to the region. And this new church was built during the First Bulgarian Empire, after the official conversion to Christianity!!!
And then, under Tsar Samuil, this temple became the residence of the Bulgarian Autocephalous Patriarchate, and later the residence of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, which was subordinate to the Patriarchate of Constantinople until the 18th century. Alas, during the Ottoman occupation it was turned into a mosque with all the consequences. Reconstruction work to bring the church to its original appearance began only after the Second World War.
Now you will get acquainted with an interesting religious building, the history of which has been “broken many copies” by learned men. And the “cherry on the cake” - especially for bonists (collectors of paper money): a fragment of the Church of Sveta Sophia was depicted on the reverse of the 1000 Macedonian dinar banknote, issued in 1996 and 2003. Highly recommend!!!

The cathedral of Hagia Sophia is one of the major churches of Ohrid and is very ancient as it was built around the year 1000 on the remains of an early Christian church destroyed during the invasions of the Slavs (in an excavation you can see a Corinthian capital that fell and was overturned. Transformed into a mosque during the Ottoman rule it however preserved frescoes which have been restored representing a fine example of Byzantine painting of the time. Worth seeing.
