We travelled with our one year old through Japan and found this indoor playground. I am so glad we did!
It was warm inside, with a small cafe that also had kid friendly food (ordered risotto for our bub and he loved it) and it was a great break from the pram and carrier for our restless bub.
The playground is for under 6 year olds, with a small oval and playground outside for older kids.
We were the only westeners inside at the time we were there and our blonde haired, blue eyed little boy was a bit of a novelty to the local kids there. But kids will be kids and they all got on with the business of playing.
There are lots of wooden toys, a small sectioned off area for the babies not yet crawling/walking, a little wooden house and kitchen set up, a great ball pit with wooden balls (sounds dangerous but I think my bub loved it better than the plastic ball pits at home) and a large play gym with stairs and slides for those a little older.
My boy spent most of the time loving life in the ball pit and cracked a fit when we left.
(It was so noisy that I got a headache and had to leave)
We went on a rainy day, so it may have been busier than usual.
Unfortunately I don't have any photos as there are signs requesting that you do not get other children in your photos, which was impossible at the time I visited.
But it is free, dry, warm and while you must watch your kid (so the area is full of adults as well) you can let them go wild and get rid of some of the energy. It is also very close to the Kyoto Imperial Palace

A really good indoor play area for our 3yr old. Loads to do when kids are bored of gardens and shrines and idea for a wet day.

Thanks for the previous review - we visited this indoor playground today with our 17m old who loved it! Beautifully clean indoor play centre with lovely wooden toys. It was a great break from temple hopping and much more fun for our toddler. The Japanese children were so cute and interacting with our daughter, it was great for her to have some little people contact during our trip. Have uploaded information leaflet in English that we were given when we went. Best of all, it was free!!

Kyoto can be a bit difficult for toddler/preschool/kindergarten aged kids. Take a break from the temples and spend some time in a free, air-conditioned/heated indoor play area. We were lucky enough to find this place (used by local and expat parents alike) located in a building attached to a kindergarten near Marutamachi station, thanks to this article on kansai kids network http://kansaikidsnetwork.com/placestoplay/playinside/kodomo-mirai-kan/. This was within walking distance from our hotel in central Kyoto. Check in at the lobby with the nice ladies in aprons and sign your name, kids first name, age, and where you are from (we wrote "America"). Take off your shoes off course. There is a baby (not moving, or just crawling) area and an area for the older kids. Don't leave your kids, you are meant to supervise them and prevent them from doing dangerous things like standing up on the slides. There are beautiful wooden toys (blocks and trains and toys where you drop in a wooden bead and it rolls down various troughs and tunnels), a large swimming pool sized tub filled with wooden beads like an indoor sand box to dig in, a play house and fake food and dollies, and the main area is a big jungle gym with two slides, ladders and bridges. There are tricycles, rocking horses and bouncy horses. In the middle of the morning, there was a short puppet time where the ladies in aprons led singing and moved felt animals/objects to demonstrate the story in the songs while they turned the crank on an organ grinder which provided the music. Apparently, on the second floor there is a library with both Japanese and English books (and elementary aged children are allowed upstairs) but we never made it. Just outside the Miraikan is a dirt play field as well as a small outdoor playground (swings, etc). We speak some Japanese and so the supervising ladies were very interested in how we found out about Miraikan and about our stay in Japan. There is also a little cafe in the lobby to get a drink and a snack (no food in the play areas themselves) and nice toilet facilities. Stroller parking is in the lobby, and if you lift up the lids on the benches you are meant to put your backpacks or bags in them to keep them out from underfoot. It's a little on the small side like everything in Japan but a true oasis for families traveling to Kyoto with young children. PS We had a hard time finding out where playgrounds are in Kyoto, there is a big playground on the grounds of the Umekoji locomotive museum (hundreds of kids there on a weekend but I imagine that it would be less crowded on weekdays).
