You’d be better off ordering online

My review reflects my experience with its customer service.
The books are great, but same can’t be said about *some* of its staff. A total turn off.

Sweet escape
mar. 2020 • Par
There are two Gerakbudaya bookshops in the heart of Georgetown, Penang. But we are not sure which one did we go to. May be the new one with non-fiction books. The atmosphere is so relaxing and you can also buy some interesting local souvenirs. The line of books offered are more critical with alternative views that cover titles on history, culture, arts, lifestyle, politics, the environment and a lot more, not limited to local discourses but also within the SEA region. At first, we thought it was a great place to escape a hot day after walking the street of Penang for hours. We ended up feeling amazed with what they offer. Bought a few books; to do some reviews.

Well curated bookstore
jan. 2020
Being a self-professed book lover, I am very critical of books that bookstores decide to display. More often than not, the bookstores carry such a varied mix of books that one loses the desire to even browse due to a deluge of variety. I prefer quaint small bookstores that carefully curate their selection and I must say Gerakbudaya has done it almost to perfection. Go here for a focus on art & literature with a splash of Malaysiana here and there. The only set back when I was there is the Cerita Cafe was closed. Btw, I went to the one on Beach Road; the bigger of the two.

Charming

Had a great experience visiting Gerakbudaya. This bookshop offers a selection of titles for those who want to know more about our world and how it came to be. Many of the authors found in this shop were those who pushed the social-consciousness forward and challenged the status quo. To have a bookstore that embraces that is refreshing. Not to mention the friendly cat who follows you around as if they've known you a lifetime. Will be coming back here next time I am in George Town.

Wonderful books and cool environment
apr. 2019 • Venner
Bookshops are a fast disappearing feature in many Asian cities. Even in Singapore. And I was pleasantly reassured of the continuity that bookshops such as Areca and this one will provide for book lovers and also social history buffs in Penang. Plus a boost to the cultural gravitas that this great place has.
They have two shops. One focusing on fiction along Kepitan Kling and the other offering a wider variety of titles and coffee table editions as well as a venue for book launches and talks. Tash Aw’s newest title is featured this month. Hooray!
Also the Mekong Review is sold here.

Surprising variety of fiction in small store
aug. 2018 • Alene
This wonderful little bookstore has a surprising variety of fiction books despite the store's small size. (Its sister store, a few blocks away at 226 Lebuh Pantai, focuses on non-fiction, with a large section on Malaysia.) I came across a few books here that I have had trouble finding for many years. Most of the books I saw were in English, although I think there were at least a few books in Bahasa, Chinese, French, and Spanish. The prices seemed about normal.

A most excellent bookshop

Great place to pick up a souvenir for the bibliophiles in the family -- they have an extensive range of books on asian topics and more. Great staff, very knowledgeable and helpful. Highly recommended!

Cozy bookshop with excellent selection
jul. 2018 • Alene
One of the best bookshops I have visited in Asia (and I have visited many). The selection is extremely well curated and it is clear that emphasis is on quality over quantity. I especially appreciated the selection of books on Malaysia and Asia in general.

If you enjoy books - a must visit!

This bookshop was a lovely find as we just stumbled upon it. It's tucked away and around the Little India district. Has a very good selection of Malaysian history books. Books are in English and the general atmosphere is pleasant. A welcome cool room as well because it's air conditioned especially if you're out and about in the afternoon.

Interesting Bookshop
dec. 2017
We have visited this Bookshop several times and each time we have found something we really just have to buy. There is a large selection of books to satisfy all tastes and the books on Penang and the Malay History are all worth browsing. You can find a good book to read on your holiday and always something to take home. They have great postcards and other items as mementos or gifts. The owners are very well informed and pleasant . A great place to spend time and buy yourself that special item.
