Beautiful views and Hike to a Spectacular valley

Beautiful view from the top of the hill but the real treasure is the hike down to the valley. There are several switchbacks that make it fairly easy to navigate if it is dry. Once you get to the bottom there is a gorgeous valley and a nice beach as well. The ropes on the other side of the beach protect a burial ground that is sacred to the Hawaiian people so be respectful. Take some pictures and stroll around a bit. King Kamehameha I grew up here so there is a very real connection to Hawaiian history. If you want beautiful views and towering sea side cliffs and mountains it will not disappoint. If you are looking for a little Hawaiian cultural education check out the Kamehameha Statue in town. The interpretive signs around the community center are informative.

The views are nice and the road to get here is nice as well. But the place is far away and though nice, I dont think its spectacular.

You can hike to the base of the valley. We were told that it will take 2 hours to do so and we didnt do it.

There is no parking or entrance fee.

Beautiful view, confusing parking!

The view was gorgeous, it was nice and sunny out over the ocean when we there, with cloud over the lovely lush valley. But the parking was crazy and confusing! The parking lot itself is very small so there were locals there, directing traffic and telling visitors they can only park for 10 minutes to enjoy the view. They were pretty strict about kicking us out when we only overstayed by about 5 minutes so that we could grab a quick snack out of our cooler. We figured out after the fact that if you want to stay longer, or hike down to the beach you have to park along the road, well outside the small parking lot. We didn’t bother trying to squeeze in along the road and do the hike as the road was very congested with cars and we did not bring proper shoes for the trail, it looked very steep. There are no washrooms but other reviewers said that a park down the road has them. It might be preferable to park at the park then walk along the road to the lookout, being careful to dodge the traffic congestion. The last few miles of road before the lookout are narrow with a lot of one lane bridges, take care around the curves.

Fantastic View

This a great stop with wonderful views of the valley a small beach. Even without doing the steep hike down to the beach, this is highly recommended.

Trail with a view!

Anything free in Hawaii is great! This was a great way to spend an afternoon waiting for our hotel check in. Drive was nice and little traffic. Trail is a bit rough but very scenic!

Gorgeous view

There is a 1 mile hike down the hill which takes you to the black sand beach and it is well worth the hike. It took us one hour to get here, one and half hour to go down the hike. We enjoyed sitting by the ocean watching the waves then hiked back up.

Stunningly beautiful!

We went here twice. The first time the trail was closed due to weather and trail conditions. We were finally able to make the trip down; it's not for those that are immobile or have health issues. The hike down is one thing, but the climb back up can be a workout. This is not a place to swim either. The people at the top tell you the risks, but even if you don't venture down the trail the view is breathtaking!

Wunderschöne Aussicht

Der Ausblick vom Lookout ist für mich einer der schönsten auf Big Island. Der Weg hinunter ist, wie bereits mehrere Male beschrieben, etwas steil und daher gutes Schuhwerk Pflicht. Obwohl wir auch einige Leute den Weg mit Sandalen oder Flip Flops haben gehen sehen. Je nach Beschaffenheit des Weges ist man in 15-20min unten. Wieder hoch in etwa 25-30min. Am Strand kann man aufgrund der starken Strömung zwar nicht wirklich baden, dennoch ist er wunderschön und lädt zum Verweilen ein.
Parkplätze sind etwas knapp. Wenn der Parkplatz voll ist, das Auto einfach der Strasse entlang abstellen. Machen hier alle so.

Amazing views and hike

If you are physically capable, this is worth the drive. We did a preliminary visit to talk to the reserve staff and make sure we could still hike down (it had been over a dozen years since we last visited). Based on the gentleman’s recommendation, we returned a few days later, pre dawn and watch the sun come up. Oh my, what a special occasion! After the sun was sufficiently up and it was safe we put our hiking boots on and hiked down. The shoreline, cliffs and crashing waves were all wonderful photo ops. Along the way down we saw wild lime trees along with many other wonderful plants. Please remember to “carry in/out” your trash. There is nothing worse to wreck nature than humans trash! A big thank you to the forest reserve men and women who work this beautiful lookout! Stop along the way to look in the unique shops and maybe grad a bite and some Kona coffee in Hawi.
