Such an interesting place to visit with very knowledgeable guides who are happy to share facts. We went on a weekend and did a self guided tour. We were there for nearly 3 hours and learnt so much. I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area.

An absolute hidden gem, what a beautiful location, we didn’t want to go home. The only downside was people don’t follow the rules, dogs off leads, people playing football next to your pitch. And many have 2-3 cars on the pitch when you are only allowed one car on site.

Some friends of mine have been here previously and recommended it as a nice place to come for a day out.
With the help of Google maps my friends and I were able to find the mill and the nearby car park. If you are a National Trust Member you can park for free but for everyone else it's £3 for your car which is not outrageous.
Lots of people were there on the day we visited making use of the small beach area and going in the river. There were also people paddle boarding and canoeing.
There is a tea shop nearby which was doing very good business with drinks, snacks and ice creams. There are also two toilets here which were also very popular (!)
The mill is still working and you can find out all about the history of the mill and see some of the old equipment. I was interested to discover that it used to be a youth hostel as well.
There are some nice walks alongside the river from here and the lock is close to the mill and it's always good to see boats going up and down in these.

I was revisiting a source of teenage memories as I stayed in this historic mill when it was a youth hostel. It was great fun seeing the mill as it was originally built in the 18th century. On weekends it is possible to see the mill working but we visited on a day when guided tours are available. We booked but on less busy days it is possible to arrive and join a tour which take place at set times. We enjoyed seeing how all the machinery connected to produce flour which it still produces.
The view in the picture is seen across the meadow from the mill and shows what a wonderful setting it is in.
We found it a well worthwhile tour with a knowledgeable guide and enjoyed our visit.

This is a little different to your usual NT properties in that most of the visitors were seemingly there not to visit the mill, but just to splash around in the river and picnic on the river bank and there is no charge to do this, other than parking if this is required. The mill itself is fairly compact, but nonetheless very interesting and it was actually running and producing flour when we visited. It’s spread across three floors and you get a good overview of the mill machinery, as well as information boards about it’s history.
Less successful were the facilities, with just two unisex cubicles inevitably resulting in very long queues, although to be fair we did subsequently discover that there were more within the mill itself. The café also wasn’t up to much, certainly not the NT’s usual standards. I opted for a caramel shortcake, and whilst it was a generous sized portion (in fact I would have gone for a Victoria sponge, but that was about half the size of a normal slice) it wasn’t really much of it, with the caramel having quite a grainy texture, and the shortbread being more like biscuit. Similarly a latte was basically just a flat white with a bit of froth on top. Worth a visit for the mill, but go somewhere else to eat.

We arrived around 7pm on a Monday evening. The night wardens were very pleasant, but were unaware of our arrival.
However, after checking our paperwork they offered us a choice of 2 pitches. We choose the pitch closer to the toilets as it was flatter and we were only staying ot 1 night.
The facilities were super clean and the shower was lovely.
The next morning we took a walk from the site across the bridge and across the lock into a lovely field full of buttercups. We did a circular walk and back along the river to the site and continued our journey to the next site.

As a couple with family and friends we have been coming to this campsite for years. If I’m honest while the location is stunning the campsite has changed sadly not for the better. It used to be belong to the caravan club and changed to The National Trust a few years ago. While in the hands of the caravan club the site was immaculate. Not a blade of grass out of place. It was so well kept. It just doesn’t have the wow factor like it used to. I think the site is lucky it’s in such a a stunning location. The facilities you cannot fault toilet block and showers are very clean. I’m sure the pitches have got smaller. We booked for a small drive a way awning but because it has a small porch we went over the allocated 6meters. We had already put this up when we were approached and told it was over. Luckily they had no one booked in next to us so allowed us to keep it up. Others had the same issue on site also. There are a lot of staff wondering around some more helpful than others. The surrounding area is amazing it is heaven for dog walkers, kayaking cyclists. There is a lovely walk/cycle path to st ives where there is a great selection of pubs even a Wetherspoons. The village has two lovely pubs both doing food and both dog friendly/child. Well stocked village shop, small tea room also in the village. The site also has a tearoom with a lovely menu. It is quite expensive but worth it for a treat. The mill also opens for tours. There is a lovely walk to Hemingford where there is also lovely pubs. Picnic benches line the area by the water, swimming has always been welcomed but last year it was roped off . I think they are trying to discourage swimming which is a shame. I always took my kids swimming there. Not sure what will happen this year. It is lovely to sit and picnic and have a dip. Sadly they have had problems in the past with litter . People seem to think it’s ok to leave their rubbish, myself and my daughter have spent the odd evening help to clean up. To sum things up this is a lovely place to stay I just think the National Trust need to give the site a little more care to get it back to what it was. The spaces need another foot to allow for awnings and the grass needs to be kept short. So not much really.

Stopped here on our journey to Suffolk for a stretch of our legs. The village is beautiful and well worth a visit.
We drove up the street where the carpark to the mill was to find cars turning around as there was a carpark full sign. We found a spot in the very crowded village to park and walked back to the mill to find the carpark wasn’t full, but the sign had been left out (locals were just ignoring the sign and driving in as this must be a regular occurrence).
At the mill we asked to renew our membership as it had recently expired, but was told they couldn’t do that there and wanted us to pay the £7 entry fee each. Why on earth could they take £14, but not take £140?
We decided to leave when the woman at the counter ran off to stop a couple who had decided £7 was too much from then entering the mill.
Such a shame the place is so poorly run.

Sorry, we didn't enquire about the cost of boat hire.

Does anyone know where the loud music comes from every night near this site? There has been live music and shouting and screaming playing every night we have been here at, I can only assume, a venue next to the site. We have not been able to find it however it is next door. Tonight is a birthday party and it is gradually getting louder and louder. No one can sleep and it's keeping the children in the site awake! I would like to know what the venue is so we can maybe get it turned down unburden to get some sleep at least one night!
Skrevet d. 27. august 2017
I do not know who is responsible for the loud music. The mill is next to a very large flood plain and I know children/teenagers like to hang out especially at this time of year, as it is the summer holidays. They are probably doing what all teenagers like to do. Why don't you get the local authorities involved. It is disturbing the local community. Probably a quiet word is needed as the ones coursing the problem are probably unaware they are coursing a issue.
