Fontana di scarso interesse (in confronto a quanto offre in merito la città eterna) realizzata dal Maderno nel 1615, in piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, davanti al sagrato dell’omonima basilica, ai piedi della Colonna della Pace, eretta dal Maderno giusto un anno prima. Alimentata da una derivazione secondaria dell’acquedotto dell’Acqua Felice, si presenta con una vasca di travertino dalla forma composita (un rettangolo che al posto dei lati corti ha due semicerchi) al cui centro, su un pilastrino, c’è un catino da cui sgorga l’acqua che poi, tramite fori sullo stesso catino, finisce nella vasca. Nella parte centrale dei lati lunghi della vasca vi sono altri due piccoli bacini sporgenti, ornati sotto da un mascherone e sopra da una piccola mostra con il bassorilievo di un’aquila ad ali spiegate, da cui esce l’acqua che finisce nel bacino (quando funziona!). Tra il ‘700 e l’800 la fontana ha subito delle modifiche che ne hanno ridotto il valore artistico: in origine il catino e il pilastro centrali erano più grandi e più articolati, mentre sui semicerchi dei lati corti della vasca vi erano dei draghi dalle cui bocche usciva altra acqua che finiva nella vasca. Anche se la fontana è posizionata sopra alcuni gradini, di solito non è immediatamente evidente, per la grandezza della piazza ma soprattutto per il massiccio basamento della Colonna della Pace a cui è addossata e che attira l'attenzione (e anche, aggiungerei, per l’onnipresente assembramento di persone sedute sui citati scalini).

La fontana è ubicata al centro dell’omonima piazza, nel quartiere Centro, sul Colle dell’Esquilino, di fronte all’omonima basilica.
Fu commissionata da Papa Paolo V all’architetto Carlo Maderno nella seconda decade del XVII secolo.
Su un basamento con quattro gradini, si nota una vasca grande, in travertino, di forma oblunga; al centro dei suoi lati più grandi ci sono due piccole e sporgenti vasche a forma di conchiglia, ornate da sottostanti mascheroni e sovrastanti aquile scolpite (simbolo araldico del suddetto pontefice), dalla testa delle quali fuoriesce l’acqua; al centro della vasca principale svetta, sorretto da un piccolo basamento, una vaschetta rotonda, dalla quale fuoriesce l’acqua attraverso alcuni fori posti lungo la sua circonferenza.
Lo stato attuale non è ottimale, avrebbe bisogno di un restauro.
Sicuramente più interessante è l’imponente colonna che si trova dietro la vasca: è ornata da un capitello corinzio, proveniente dalla Basilica di Massenzio, e dalla sovrastante scultura bronzea della Vergine; la colonna è detta anche colonna della Pace, perché la suddetta basilica era nota anche come Tempio della Pace.

Al centro della grande piazza della basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore si trova questa fontana, una delle tante di Roma e di certo non una delle più significative. Sotto la colonna con capitello corinzio proveniente dalla basilica di Massenzio vi è una grande vasca in travertino con in mezzo un bacile circolare da cui sgorga l'acqua. La fontana è opera di Carlo Maderno per volontà di papa Paolo V della famiglia Borghese, di cui le aquile ai lati della vasca sono un simbolo.

The lovely fountain,fed by the Felice Aqueduct and set against the base of a colossal fluted column, is by Carlo Maderno, who built it in 1615 with the collaboration of Giuseppe de' Vecchi on commission of Pope Paul V of the Borghese family.
The column was the only survivor of the basilica of Maxentius, which had been erected the previous year by Maderno himself to place the bronze statue of the Virgin by Guglielmo Berthélot on the top of its Corinthian capital.
Currently the fountain is located on a base of four steps plus a fifth step higher a couple of meters from the street level.
It consists of an oblong tank from the center of which a baluster raises a circular basin from which a short gush of water departs.
The eagles, symbols of the coat of arms of Pope Paul V Borghese, who commissioned the work, which adorned the fountain, still pour water into the smaller basins of the short sides of the fountain, while the dragons, another emblem of the Borghese family, which once decorated the long sides of the same basin, have been lost.
The dragons were perhaps lost during the road level adaptation works carried out in the 19th century. In fact, to allow such works, the fountain may have been moved and then rebuilt.
The pair of dragons was eliminated, and the baluster and the upper basin were probably replaced with similar elements much smaller and of lesser architectural value.
It seems certain that the modest basin of today is not the original one which appeared much richer and wider.
In particular, the podium and the steps currently in masonry, were three and not four, and in travertine.
On that same occasion, the drinking trough located behind the column, on the opposite side of the fountain, also disappeared.
The fountain is not as popular as those in front of churches such as Santa Maria In Trastevere or Santa Maria ai Monti, although it has big steps all around where people could sit and watch people go by.
Nonetheless it is cute and if you are close to the basilica, it is worth crossing the street and stopping for a few minutes.

The fountain is located at the foot of the Santa Maria Maggiore column , facing the Basilica. It was ordered by Pope Paul V in 1614 for Carlo Maderno. It has a large oblong pond with a round basin supported in the middle, and a balustrade, from which water is poured by holes along the perimeter. At the center of the longer sides of travertine there are two small protruding basins, decorated with masks on the outside. Currently it is located on a rise of four steps plus a high step that raise it from the road level by a couple of meters.A valuable sculptural fountain placed just in front of the main facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The whole is absolutely interesting.
