The church of St. Anthony of Egypt, located in via Carlo Alberto, was built in 1308 next to the pre-existing hospital built by Cardinal Pietro Capocci in 1259 to accommodate patients suffering from skin diseases and in particular from the so-called "St. Anthony's fire", what we call herpes zoster or shingles.
The hospital, built next to the 5th century church of "S.Andrea cata barbara", took its name from this church and the first rector was appointed by Clement IV in 1266.
About twenty years later Pope Nicholas IV transferred the administration of the 'hospital' to the Antonines Fathers, who obtained the decree of the construction of a new church in 1308 and it was thus that the new complex consisting of church and hospital was dedicated to St. Anthony Abbot.
In 1481 the new church underwent a first reconstruction at the behest of Cardinal Costanzo Guglielmi and it was then that the ancient church of "St Andrea cata barbara" disappeared, incorporated into the large enclosure of the complex: the beautiful Romanesque portal that we see today as the entrance to the church would be the main entrance of the ancient complex.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century the church underwent a further restoration by an architect from the school of Alessandro Galilei and from the middle of the century it was assigned to the Camaldolese nums who kept it until 1871.
In 1928 the he entire complex was purchased by the Holy See and the church, restored by the will of Pius XI, was assigned to the Russian Catholics of the Byzantine rite, the dedication to St Anthony the Great was maintained, while the ancient hospital was transformed into a famous center of Russian and Oriental studies called "Collegio Pontificio Russicum".
The two-flight staircase leading to the church dates from 1870.
In 1928 the Holy See bought the whole complex to build the Russicum college (which later became the famous Russian and Oriental study center).
Pius XI had the façade and the portal restored in 1932 (Italian architect Antonio Muñoz), entrusting the church to the Jesuit Fathers of the Russicum College.
The façade retains the majestic Romanesque portal (c. 1262-66), the only evidence of the ancient hospital.
The interior, in eighteenth-century forms, has a three-nave plan divided by pillars.
The church, modified to adapt to the requirements of the Orthodox rite, has a three-door iconostasis (Grigorij Pavlovic Maltzeff).
In the center, the "Porta Reale", is opened only in the most solemn moments of the celebration.
When the royal door opens, it is possible to glimpse the large canvas with the beautiful "Crucifixon" by Giovanni Odazzi.
The church is very beautiful and there is a great vibe of devotion and spirituality.
Attending Sunday mass is also very suggestive and the singing voices are beautiful to listen to.
