A fairly recent museum since it only opened 20 years ago in the Marais district - the old Jewish quarter of the city.
The exterior is not very appealing with its grey concrete; but it is absolutely worth a visit.
When entering the secured access which is unfortunately needed here, you will find the walls of names - always sending shivers down my back.
The museum is more below and above, so you start at minus 3 and work your way up.
The lowest floor has a permanent exhibition of the history of Jews of Paris; then one floor up there are changing exhibitions. There are many interactive as well as audio and visual elements to accompany the visitor.
The crypt is on the highest underground level (minus 1) and is absolutely poignant - the star of David in a huge room with an eternal flame.
There will never be enough words to describe the atrocity of what happened; but there can be words to make new generations understand how to avoid this.
My credo will always be Forget, do not forgive!
The museum is furthermore free of charge for entrance!

It seems, I fear, that those who thought the Shoah could never happen again are mistaken.
In recent years, there have been scary events.
And that is why, precisely, now, with everything that is happening in France, it is more important than ever to visit this site.
Because we must never forget!

In the dark times that we live, with the resurgence of anti-Semitism, it is vital to visit this place, read the names and look at the photos of children/babies cowardly taken to the extermination camps.
Read the heart-cut farewell letter that Golda Bancic wrote on the eve of his execution, asking to be handed over to his daughter.
Look at the star of David in black marble symbolizing the six million dead Jews without a grave.
To highlight also the temporary exhibition Foreigners in the Resistance of France, in tribute to these brave men who had the courage to confront Nazi cruelty.
And since not everything is negative, visit the Wall of the Righteous among the Nations, one of the greatest honors you can receive, for the courage to risk your life in defense of what is right.

* It has interesting and useful exhibits and documentation- very academic
* A good display of historical artifacts- especially startling and sobering were the remnants of the citizenry lists that the evil N@zis used to find their Jewish victims.
* Located in Le Marais, near other tourist stuff
CONS
* This is a sobering place to reflect on man’s inhumanity and cruelness to the “other.”
* The lighting overall is dim.
* There is very heavy security with heavy doors and bullet-proof glass
{I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because it is important to remember this dark era, so that it is never repeated. It is somber and sobering.
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It is free
WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Yes
ADVICE
* This is an important historical place to visit and to learn of the inhumanity and suffering
* Be prepared for a sobering experience
* Look at the names inside the museum grounds of the wall of victims and the names of French heroes on the wall outside the museum
* One hint to make your visit more comfortable- yes, there are lockers to put your stuff, but we only saw them at the end of walking through the entire museum. So ask where are the lockers when you enter.

We were delighted to be led on a presentation in English by Esta whose knowledge and experience extended beyond our expectation - simply outstanding, interesting yet challenging upon reflection. The visit also incorporated an exhibition on the Olympic Games so well thought out and again challenging on all that it means to be humankind. Both experiences were most definitely highlights of our trip to Paris and worthy of the highest recommendation. Thank you to all concerned - so very much appreciated.

It draws on a century of Olympics to retrace an unprecedented history of the Olympic Games.
If the exhibition pays particular attention to the Berlin Olympic Games organized by Nazi Germany in 1936 and to the athletes interned in Drancy during the Second World War, it also shows that the values of Olympism constitute a real lever for fighting. against racism, anti-Semitism and creating society.

My husband and I visited here after a walking resistance tour. The museum was excellent, easy to follow, with nearly all explanations in English. I had really wanted to go here, and was rewarded. Very much worth our time. It wasn’t crowded, and easy to move around in, or sit if that’s your preference. My only disappointment was the bookshop was closed for lunch.
Our thanks to everyone who made this museum possible.

Place of memory in the Marais remembering one of the saddest episodes in French history. Free and secure access, always with exhibitions related to the theme. A memorial so that horrors like these never happen again.

More invested than ever in the French resistance, foreigners have continued to get involved in the armed struggle and in political action. Thus, it is quite natural that the Shoah Memorial decided to pay tribute to these men and women of courage, through this large-scale exhibition, highlighting posters, portraits and handwritten letters. Whether they are naturalized or foreign, Spanish or Italian, Armenian or Central European Jew, what is striking about these fighters is their convergence within the homeland. They thereby demonstrate their attachment to the values of human rights.
To accompany this Pantheonization of a resolutely universalist dimension, the exhibition centers its remarks on the Parisian FTP-MOI while broadening it to the various modalities of the resistant commitment of foreigners. From various political movements, within the internal resistance as well as Free France, it is around the France of human rights, the France of the Enlightenment that these plural identities were combined.

Ça me prendra combien de temps pour une bonne visite? Est-il possible de le faire avec une visite à MAHJ la même journée?

Are there exhibits that focus on Jewish victims who, at high-risk to themselves, dared to try to care for others and improve their survival chances while in Nazi camps?
Skrevet d. 31. maj 2018
While there is no such specific exhibit, I beg to differ from the previous response. This is an extremely touching memorial to the 76,000 French victims of the Holocaust and those of us who are descendants, survivors, Jews, or simply humans. It will stay with you forever, as it well should. Take the time to see the Beate and Serge Klarsfeld exhibit; to sign the book honoring Simone Veil; to meditate in the Memorial Hall facing the eternal flame set in a Star of David; to read and touch some of the 76,000 names of those deported, engraved on walls in the courtyard; to acknowledge the courage of those among the 3,300 names on the Wall of the Righteous. It is a small memorial of great significance and I go every single time I am in Paris, which is very often. Not to be missed.

Skrevet d. 31. maj 2018
No, not specifically that topic unless there’s a special exhibit when you visit. The research dept./ibrary is on the forth floor of the museum. Request assistance from the librarian. There’s a wealth of resource material re holocaust there.

Is the audioguide (5 euros) just for the regular/permanent exhibit, or does it also include the "Holocaust and The Comics" exhibit?
Skrevet d. 18. juli 2017
I don't recall there being an audioguide for « Shoah et bande dessinée ». The exhibit is self-explanatory by reading the posted commentaries in French beside each exhibit. I don't recall whether the commentaries were in other languages. There's more on the Shoah Museum, Paris, website.

Is the Shoah Memorial handicapped accessible?
Skrevet d. 31. maj 2017
There are elevators, however, some parts are not accessible. You may want to call ahead, in case there are accessibility features I was not aware of. They speak English.

If i were to brisk through this memorial within 30 mins would it b possible?
Skrevet d. 7. november 2016
Certainly can do the outside part in that time. You would not manage the museum attached to it
Skrevet d. 7. november 2016
How long should I allow for an in-depth visit? Is there information about Jewish resistance groups?
Skrevet d. 30. september 2016
You can spent as long as you want there ,there are videos to see and lots to read along the way, I would suggest a minimum of two hours. Re Jewish resistance , yes there is information available.

Il museo è aperto tutti i giorni? Quale stazione metrò e più comoda? Grazie
Skrevet d. 30. marts 2016
Il memoriale è molto vicino all'Ile Saint Louis e all'Ile de la Cité.
