This is one of the old Jewish neighborhoods in Paris. It's full of historic buildings, but little remains of the Jewish heritage. Still you can find a Holocaust memorial and a Jewish museum. So many buildings have been recycled and are now upscale.

One of the traditional Jewish neighborhoods in Paris, now known for falafel stands and high-end shopping. Now a gentrified and crowded tourist area. Good architecture, lots of history.

This always turns into one of our centers in Paris because it's the only area in Paris with several restaurants whose kashrus we trust, and two which we like. It's also got at least one grocery store where we can find a variety of kosher foods, a synagogue designed by Hector Guimard and still in daily use - as far as I know, this is the only synagogue he ever designed, and streets which remind us of what pre-Haussmann Paris was like.

It's also close to several things worth seeing, such as the Musee Carnavalet, and has a metro stop (St. Paul) VERY close.

I've also had some strange and interesting conversations here with the sort of strange and interesting tourists who come to look at the strange and interesting Jews. Once on our most recent trip, when I was too exhausted and overwhelmed by the pleasures of being a tourist, I walked up to some likely-looking guy in the street and asked him where I could find a beis midrash in the neighborhood where I could just study and be left alone. He immediately answered. I forthwith abandoned my wife to her shopping for gifts, clothes, and doodads - she found a very good used clothing shop - and made my escape. She's used to this, and if there's anyplace on earth where a woman can safely be left to wander alone without much knowledge of the language, it's the Pletzl.

We also found a strange and wonderful coffee-and-culture shop which is run as a sort of mistaken side-show by a local charity organisation. I think that a cup of coffee cost 2 Euros, and the concert was free, though they do pass around a hat afterwards.

This district has nice parks, coherent architecture, and rare for Paris, great street food. Falafel was extraordinary. We stood in awe at a video kiosk with interviews of Jewish victims of the Naxi occupation of Paris.

We hung out here a lot since our hotel (near the Pompidou Center) was a ten-minute walk and because there is a high concentration of kosher eateries. But there are also loads of pricey boutiques and an atmosphere that is utterly unique. Narrow streets, an old-world vibe and the best baked goods and falafel in the city. This is the center of the Marais and there's nothing else like it.
