Great for ramblers
jul. 2021 • Familierejse
This review is not written for ramblers, you will love Eday. It’s a review for everyone else

We took a day trip to Eday as we were keen to see the Islands while in Orkney. Unfortunately we needed to book the ferry in advance due to Covid so couldn’t decide if the weather was going to be ok or not and when we visited the weather wasn’t kind to us.

We followed the route to see the Cairns which wasn’t easy to do as there really isn’t a path and visibility wasn’t great even in July due to the weather. We did see all the cairns, the walk would be lovely on a nice day but alas not so good in the rain.

I would go back to Eday if the weather is nice but be aware that you need to know the country code and be used to rambling over hills. If you aren’t, this island may not be for you.

The community centre was a godsend as we could get a hot drink there.

This island doesn't make the most of its tourism potential
sep. 2019
The available tourist information from Orkney Ferries gives maps of roads and places of interest on each island. However it is not always easy to find these points of interest and very often they are inaccessible either because of boggy terrain or they are fenced off by the farmers.
On Eday we found the majority of roads very good. Toilets can be found at the ferry terminal. There is nowhere on this island to have something to eat - remember to take a picnic with you. The Heritage Centre is a converted kirk and is light and airy. In there you will find some more public toilets and also the facility to boil a kettle to make hot drinks. Sometimes there may be a community café in there. We found the Stone of Setter and there was a clear pathway for visitors to follow to see it. However the same cannot be said for Braeside Chambered Tomb, Hunterquoy Chambered Tomb and the Vinquoy Hill Chambered Tomb. These three are in close proximity and alignment with the Setter Stonebut you can't see them. The other dissappointment with the island was the landscape was blighted with rusting abandoned vehicles.

Wonderful experience at the Ruah
sep. 2018 • Par
My husband and I stayed at the Ruah for three nights in September and were delighted by our experience. Val and Allen were excellent hosts, taking time to help us with our family history quest and familiarizing us with the island. They met at the ferry and acquainted us with the cottage. As soon as we entered the cottage, we felt right at home. The furnishings are comfy and the king-size bed is very comfortable. The view over the ocean is incredible and sunset is spectacular. The one store on the island is open daily 9-1 and has basic groceries, beer, and wine. You will need to bring a car from Kirkwall for exploring the island.. The weather is very changeable so be sure to bring layers and a rain jacket. We enjoyed the Heritage hike and our stroll on the beach on the west side of the island. Overall, a wonderful visit.

Peace, light, wildlife and unspoilt views
jun. 2018 • Venner
Beautiful peaceful island where you really feel like you’ve got away from it all. We saw seals on one of the many beaches that we had to ourselves, along with oyster catchers and other sea birds. The stones on the beach are lovely colours and textures and the wide skies offer a painter’s paradise. We also saw lots of owls, rabbits and birdlife amongst the pastoral scenes of local crofts with sheep, cows and pigs living a free range life. Great walking and no sparkly tops or high heeled shoes required!

Mike Ilett's Submarine museam & North School House & gardens & Eday Heritage Centre
aug. 2017 • Forretningsrejse
Had a works outing to Eday for BBQ and trip to EMEC's Caldale site, had a tour around island in minibus and went to visit Mike at North School House and were amazed by his gardens, his models of windmill, lighthouse and house in his garden. We then saw the school room with the desks and archive of papers from back in the 1800s onwards, very interesting.
His models that he has made since he was 14 are amazing too but the most amazing thing is the Submarine he has built from parts of old dismantled submarines is beyond words. He sent 3.5yrs in the Navy and has a wealth of knowledge and it was like the Tardis inside and went on and on with so much history and information.
If you ever get to Orkney, do a daytrip to Eday and visit the beautiful island where its quiet and peaceful with lovely scenery and walks, beaches etc
Visit Mike's house & gardens and then stop off at the Heritage Centre to see all the info on the island and enjoy the lovely homebakes in the cafe.
Well worth the day trip and so much more to see than we had time for.

Stay at the Ruah
maj 2017 • Par
This delightful croft is so homely and sleeps two. We spent five nights there and could not have wished for a better place to stay. The croft is extremely well equipped and comfortable. There is a power shower in the en-suite, which we liked. The view is fantastic, watching the ferry coming and going all day. Eday has a fully equipped shop/post office with a small self-serve coffee area where there is free wi-fi. If you like hiking there are plenty of walks to enjoy.

Eday Hostel
maj 2016 • Familierejse
Community hostel in the centre of the island is well appointed and spacious offering fully equipped kitchen, lounge with tv, bunk bedded rooms, wet-room showers and laundry room inside with 2 electric hook-ups for caravans & motorvans.(on hardstanding).and grassy area for tents outside.
The only niggle was that the wind turbine which powers the hostel can get very noisy in the frequent high winds - campers should pack earplugs!
Tents £7.50 pn Caravans £10.50 pn (incl electrics)
1m from island Post Office/supermarket - passing Island Museum en route.- and approx 4m from ferry. Less than 1/2 mile from London Airport (!) with flights twice weekly. Ideal for walkers, birders etc.
