Fantastic gardens and certainly worth a visit. Café expensive but quality very good.
My only real criticism is there should be a free garden map so as not to miss anything. There is a guide with a map at a price of £5.

This was my second visit to East Ruston. The first was about 15 years ago when I was blown away by the gardens and planting. Returning after many years I was disappointed. Generally it was looking a little tired. A lot more land had been purchased and developed but was 'more of the same' and nothing to really wow the visitor. Hedge cutting was underway in earnest and involved 5 men cutting before 12 noon when the visitors are admitted to the gardens, and then raking and wheelbarrowing the clippings away to be burned. In total a length of 10 miles of hedges which will take until mid Dec to complete!!!! Rather them than me!

Visited these gardens yesterday.
The entry price was £13 per person. There was no concessions for seniors. Children, (I think) £2.
There was no map included in this price and the guidebook which did have a map was an additional £5.
Dogs were not allowed!
Taking your own food, also not allowed.
I was a little apprehensive about visiting a garden at the end of the season, when most plants are not at their best, however there was still plenty of colour in these gardens.
This attraction is vast and had some beautiful manicured areas, although there was also a lot of areas needing some TLC, which were tatty and quite unkempt.
Lots of areas had weeds, dead and dying growth. Overgrown shrubs and plants which overhung the walkways.
There were lots of fallen and rotting apples, as some fruit looked more than ready for picking.
Plants were not visibly labelled, although the owners claim that there are labels which have been covered up by the ‘overgrown’ plants which is not really much good to the visiting public, who have an interest in the plants they’re seeing.
I asked one gardener about a plant which was smothered with bees, but she didn’t know what it was. So I had to go in search of another gardener to ask.
Other ornamental gardens we’ve visited have all had discreet but still visible plant labelling.
There was also a distinct lack of directional signs. We didn’t know which paths to take in order to make the most of the different areas. We saw some areas several times and completely missed others.
At one point I really needed the toilet. It took us quite some time to find someone to ask and to find our way back to the only block of toilets in the gardens, as there are NO TOILET SIGNS apart from the sign directly outside the lavatory.
The trees are so tall, the cafe and toilet roof tops are not visible, to be able to find your way back. (toilets are near the entrance).
Once we did find them, we found them to be very basic but clean and serviceable.
The food in the cafe is expensive. My husband had a cheese salad with a decent chunk of cheddar, but the salad comprised of a what I’d describe as a green leaf ‘garnish’, a handful of halved cherry tomatoes and a spoon of cold slaw.
I had a ham salad with even less green leaf ‘garnish’, the same few tomatoes and a small teaspoon of cold slaw. Both came with a small baguette. These were just under £10 each!
There is ample parking, so I would suggest taking a picnic with you to eat in the car.
If you’re disabled and in a wheelchair, or you have a pushchair, you may find it difficult to get around all areas. They do have a disabled toilet.
The staff are friendly and overall, the gardens are very pretty. There are areas with an impressive view, where you can look down a manicured lawn with a peep hole at the end, revealing the landscape beyond, where you can see a church through one and a lighthouse through another.
I would give this attraction a far higher mark if there was good signage, plant labelling and if the food was either more affordable or better value for money.

We had a great family day out at these beautiful gardens. So peaceful you could be lost for hours in the beautiful gardens. Lovely little cafe on site we had amazing home made cream teas. It’s a great place for families or just if you feel you need to escape from the world for a bit. The gardens are so well kept and presented one we had been here others we visited just couldn’t compare. The price to get in was reasonable and good value as you can be there for hours. Would definitely recommend fantastic day out

Me and my mother came here by chance when looking for a garden to visit in the local area and what a find!!!
We were both blown away by the imagination, passion, creativity and dedication over the years that has resulted in these simply stunning gardens. We were met with colour, variation and tranquility in abundance.
As an added bonus the plants you could buy are taken from the gardens and in a lot of cases are plants you wouldn’t find in most nurseries. To finish off our meander we had a pleasant tea and cake at the cafe; which capped a perfect day.
This place is incredible and an absolute MUST!!

The place is awash with beautiful areas / rooms / views as you wander around. The only complaint we heard from other visitors was that they were "lost" and did not want to miss anything !
So, to make sure that you see everything do purchase the guide book - its only £5 and well worth it to support these two guy's venture !

I last visited several years ago and was very impressed with the garden and the planting. I made a spur of the moment return this week. Sadly I was rather disappointed and underwhelmed. I know it’s been a miserable year and I can’t blame anyone for a few weeds, in fact I prefer a bit of unruliness. However the planting didn’t seem as rich and varied as last time. The numerous glasshouses didn’t seem to have much colour. That said it is still an impressive garden but for the admission price I do think they could offer you a map.
The biggest disappointment though was the tea room. It was possibly the worst cheese scone I’ve ever had, thin and heavy!!

Been here previously, returned as we loved it so much but were disappointed on our return visit
The gardens were not as well maintained, lack of signage around the gardens is disappointing. We met other couples trying to find certain gardens who also complained of this..
Also once in the gardens difficult to navigate to the toilets at the entrance.
A free map would have helped.
Stopped for some food in the cafe, only basic drinks on sale and served in very small cups. The food was extremely over priced. My partner ordered a steak pie thinking it would fill him up, very cheap meat pie consisting of mainly potato and a bit of carrot and the smallest fragrant of meat. This pie was served “hot” but it was barely warm.! At £7:50 I expect more than a very basic cheap pie.
In future if we do visit again we will take our own food.

These gardens are 50 years old and a real labour of love, there was a room showing the photos of the property when they bought it and then at each stage of creation and expansion. The gardens covered a huge area and were lots of independent sections, separated by hedges, trees or walls and each section had its own theme.
We got the impression that the upkeep was now too much as lots of the areas were in need of some TLC and there was also a distant lack of signage or any obvious route so we just wandered around and may have missed some areas entirely. The online map was pointless as there was no signal so we did buy the guide book before we sat down for cake and Deb read that. There were some fantastic sections with lots of colour and insect life and we saw some recently shorn alpacas too and it was a pleasant 2.5 hours.

A lovely day spent wandering through these beautiful private gardens that the owners generously open to the public. We arrived as the gardens were opened, toilets very clean. Everyone working there was welcoming and the cakes in the tea room were delicious. We bought a guide book and followed the layout - plenty of benches and seats to take a rest and admire the very different areas of this 32 acre garden. Areas where you can shelter if there is a shower or it’s very sunny. The website makes it clear who these gardens are suitable for.
Hope to go back in the Autumn to see how the garden has changed with the seasons. We live in South Suffolk but if we lived closer we’d be visiting as often as we could.

Dogs are not allowed and I remember it being £8 each but judging by the other review, it must have gone up since I last went a year ago.

I would like to bring my elderly mother however she walks with a stick ,will she be able to get around the gardens?

Whilst there are some uneven gravel paths and a few steps, I would think your mum would be able to navigate the garden with no issues.
