Compact museum with plenty to see plus videos and sound recordings with people who worked on the canals. Also looks at the ice trade, shipping ice from Norway and storing it underground in the heart of London.

My husband and I truly enjoyed this wonderful little museum, which is packed with fascinating exhibits, including a historic ice well and actual canal boat. Reasonable admission price, delightful staff. We hope to come back and take a canal boat ride!

We spent an hour in the museum and then went on a canal boat ride. All the staff both in the museum and on the boat were lovely.
The museum has lots to see, read, listen to and explore.
The boat was very comfortable and we got a nice cuppa!
The guide on the boat was very informative. Highly recommended.

We can here to see the museum & go on the canal boat. A mince pie & a drink was served. Was fun & grate seeing the canals where you cannot walk along.

There is more in this museum than I expected. We were told about the history of the ice trade from Norway, how it was transported via canal to here then stored. We got to see the ice vats which were half filled with rubble post World War II - although it is still extremely large. It's somewhere you will spend about 30-60 minutes (don't forget to go upstairs too) and it was most reasonably priced at 8 pounds.

We booked a couple of months in advance to take the long trip to Victoria Park passing through the Islington Tunnel. We loved the relaxed atmosphere on board and the crew were very professional throughout. Tony was a most enthusiastic and interesting guide who gave us lots of information about the history of the Regents Canal, life on canals in general, and about the various buildings and sights we passed. We were asked if they wanted to help with the locks and were also offered the chance to steer. We took some snacks with us as the trip lasts between 4-5 hours but fresh coffee, tea and (very nice) biscuits were available throughout and a stop is made so that you can buy sandwiches if you want. Look round the museum (takes about an hour) and buy any souvenirs before you start the trip as the end point is normally in Islington (rather than back at the Museum). A brilliant day out!

A fascinating museum with lots of information about the history of canals in the London area. Plus the wildlife that can be seen today. A trip on Longtom canal boat through the atmospheric Islington tunnel is also recommended.

We had a very interesting and informative visit at this small museum about the history of canal development in England, with descriptions of life of the people who worked and lived on the barges. The museum is located an a canal mooring basin in central London (adjacent to Kings Cross railway station). Entrance fee is cheap. No need to pre-book. There were few visitors when we were there. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We are very pleased we visited. After the visit we walked along the canal towpath to Camden Lock market. Plenty of places en route to stop for a snack and drink.

Small museum but filled with interesting information. Great for folks who were completely unaware of canal history in London. Make sure to take a stroll along the Regent canal from the museum to the Coal Dump. Beautifully “reclaimed” area of resurrected warehouses and industrial sites. We enjoyed a short canal ride on LongTom and will return for a longer cruise of the canal. Great staff. Friendly and informative.

Will we be bringing down our elderly Mum in her wheelchair and are looking for places around Kings Cross to show her, so is the museum easily accessible and is there a cafe nearby?
Skrevet d. 14. juli 2016
For some reason this question didin't get answered right away (sorry) but for anyone else who is looking at this, the museum is fully accessible to wheelchair users and other disabled visitors. We don't have a cafe. We have a hot drinks machine. There are numerous cafes nearby and most are wheelchair-accessible.
