Wow what a fascinating tour. Not for the faint hearted. Loads of interesting facts . Very well taken care if all the way through. Mum couldn't face the stairs down so the staff refunded Mum and dad. Gave them tea and took such good care of them. We were able to carry on with the tour. .I actually think she could have done it. But as she had recent eye surgery she panicked ..Keep in mind 100 steps down and obviously you have to go back up. Just take your time.
Highly recommend..fabulous wall from the visitors centre. Well maintained. Mum and dad are 85 and 86 yrs old. They managed with little sit downs . Beautiful scenery. .

We enquired about visiting here at the NT car park for the white cliffs. I do not understand why you cannot pre book a time slot and the all the visits are done on a “first come first served” basis when you arrive at the shelters. We had to pay by card at the white cliffs visitor centre and risk the 40 min walk to the tunnels for a tour but if no availability we’d have lost out! We were fortunate to get a space on a tour but then extra people kept coming and then ended up with too many and the guides had to turn people away who’d walked specially for the tunnels - again it seems silly how you cannot book for a known time and then staff all know numbers per tour and not just a wait and see who turns up!
Our guide, Robert, was fantastic and very knowledgeable. The tunnels was a very interesting experience and our children (11 and 7) enjoyed it too. Lots of steps down - of course this means 125 steps back up too!!

Plenty of parking at the White Cliffs car park. Free if you are a National Trust member or £5 for non member. Simply follow the very well made path and after 20 to 30mins you’ll arrive at Fan Bay Shelter.
You can find all the detail via the website which includes what to expect, times, admission fee etc.
If however you are walking along and come across Fan Bay Shelter do give it a go. It costs £10 per adult. The tour is about an hour in length and goes on the hour. There are plenty of staff to advice you. You are provided with a hard hat with headlamp attached. Wear decent footwear as there are quite a lot of steps down and it is damp. Our guide, (Andrew), was excellent and very knowledgeable. He answered questions and pointed out interesting features. There are no large reconstruction exhibits in the shelter as they would rust and rot away, so the tunnels are empty but you can imagine what it must have been like taking shelter. The tour goes outside to learn about ‘sound mirrors’ before going back in. The exit is back up the stairs.
Wheelchair access is not possible.
Overall a very good and an interesting tour of an historic site which may never have been possible without the hard work of volunteers.

Visited this tunnel when we come across it while walking along the trail enjoying the White Cliffs of Dover. Admission price paid for this includes the guided tour and helmets. We were lucky to have a knowledgeable guide to explained what happened in the past clearly and concisely. It is interesting to see this structure and imagine what the soldiers went through during the fighting that went on. There is a fairly long flight of steps leading into the tunnel so those with mobility challenges might want to check the access first.

Steve was a brilliant tour guide, very passionate about the topic and gave lots of interesting information. Lots of steps down and up obviously so may be difficult for those with bad knees. Absolutely worth the time and money to take this tour. Will definitely visit again in future.

Went to The White Cliffs today 30th Sept 2023 on a national trust KM Media free ticket experience which got us into the war tunnels at fan bay .what an experience. Emma our guide after having our helmets fitted lead us down the 125 steps into the tunnel and was so well informed, giving us a really good tour. Emma explined all about the tunnels how people during the war in 1940/41 lived for months down the tunnels during the war. Showing water tanks, storeroom and sleeping arrangements . Taking us out to the sound mirrors and explaining in depth how they were used to a focal point of giving up to 20 minutes time during the war of knowing the area the enemy at the time were coming from.
We then went onto climb the south foreland lighthouse with just as good a guide. These guides are all voluntary and do exceptionally good jobs making our whole day very enjoyable.

I have visited the Dover Castle with its tunnels (English Heritage) as well as Chislehurst Caves (which has a long history, dating back to neolithic times) a few times, and despite being a member of both EH and National Trust for some years, having walked the White Cliffs and visited South Foreland Lighthouse, I never heard about Fan Bay Deep Shelter until recently. The information promoting it is buried in the NT handbook under the White Cliffs heading. I found the Internet website rather more helpful in planning a trip there.
The history of these particular tunnels dates from 1940 when they were built in 100 days and add another thread to the 'Fortress Britain' story of the desperate defence against Nazi bombing and expected invasion provided by those other tunnel systems. While the Dover Castle tunnels provide a 'Son et Lumiere' projected video experience to give a feel for those dark times, I would say the Fan Bay tunnels provide a more spartan and starkly pristine sense of what is would have been like to have served there and then, while we were adorned with miner's helmets and battery lights, especially as contrasted with the colourful beauty of the White Cliffs foreshore and seaviews after you emerge. Really, though it is the history and purpose of the installations there as provided by the knowledgeable guides on the tour, coupled with a tour up top of the concrete sound mirrors, a technological precursor to radar, which made the trip worthwhile for me.
I would say this is a rewarding trip for anyone with with an interest in the history of the second world war. Note that you have to walk from the White Cliffs visitor centre car park and there are a lot of steps to descend and ascend the tunnels themselves. It is worth making it a day trip and combining visiting this with an extended walk and visit to the South Foreland Lighthouse.

I was very nervous to go down to visit the Fan Bay Deep Shelter as I'm claustrophobic. The National Trust staff were amazing and explained what the shelter is like before I decided to go down. The lady even gave me an extra tourch which was really lovely of her.
Our tour guide Robert a volunteer for the National Trust was great. He was very knowledgeable and made sure we were both ok as we got down to the shelter (125 steps) We very lucky as it was just my boyfriend and I on the tour.
We felt very safe as when we got down to the shelter Robert radioed up to the ladies to let them know we were safety down and then did the same when we were due to go up the steps.
We really enjoyed hearing about the shelter and the staff really were lovely.

We missed the last tour while at the lighthouse last week so we came back. Parked at the visitors’ centre had lunch and then followed the path across the cliffs. Greeted by some lovely staff and given such an informative tour by our guide. Walked back to the visitor centre and had ice cream, tea and cake. 10/10!

Hi, my husband daughter and I are looking forward to visiting the shelter over the Easter holidays! However, I have just noticed the age restriction. My daughter is 12 in 5 months time, she would love to visit the tunnels as she has been studying the war at school. If we accept full responsibility for her during the tour so is there any chance she could come with us on a tour?
FanBayNT
Dover, UK
Hello, apologies for the delay in the response, I missed the prompt on this! The age restriction is mainly an advisory as it is a 45minute to one hour tour, you need to go down 172 steps and then back up and it is a hard hat tour with no lighting except the head torch, so not suitable for some younger children. If you are comfortable that your daughter will enjoy the tour and engage with it, then that will be fine.

Hi from Canada! My wife and I will be visiting in May 2019 and where wondering how long it takes to do this tour? Since she is not a fan of " closed up areas" I will be doing it myself. Will she have to wait long for the tour to end? ( total length of time)..THANKS.. Mike

Dover, UK
Hi Mike, thanks for your question. The tour takes between 45 minutes to 1 hour. South Foreland Lighthouse and Mrs Knotts tearoom are only a 15 minute walk away however, so often people not going down the tunnels, meet their parties there with a cup of tea!

I am not able to climb many steps - Is there a walking ramp available?
FanBayNT
Dover, UK
Hello, I'm afraid that the shelter is underground and only accessibly via 125 steps down, and the exit is back up those steps. We do have a photo book that explores the excavation and some of the history and volunteers who will be able to tell you all about the history, but the shelter itself may not be suitable if you have limited mobility.

What is the minimum recommended age for children?
FanBayNT
Dover, UK
Hello there,
Thank you for your question. The minimum age for going on a tour of Fan Bay is 12 years old as we do not think the raw nature of the tunnels is suitable for under this age.
For more information regarding Fan Bay please consult the Fan Bay information page on the National Trust White of Dover website
Hope this helps!

Can you buy your ticket in advance or do you have to buy them day off at the visitor center?
FanBayNT
Dover, UK
Hi there,
All tickets for Fan Bay are sold on the day at Fan Bay itself, although you can enquire at the Visitor Centre as to whether or not there are any spaces available.
I hope that helps.

How far is the Fan Bay Shelter from the cruise port in Dover?
Are cabs readily available at the port?
How far is Fan Bay from Dover castle?
FanBayNT
Dover, UK
Hello there,
There are cabs available at the Cruise terminal, there is also a bus service that runs on 'port of call' days. You can purchase a £5 'Rover' ticket on this bus service which stops at Market Square (Dover Town Centre), Dover Castle and at the National Trust White Cliffs of Dover Visitor Centre. The service to the visitor centre runs once every hour. From the Visitor Centre Fan Bay is, as has been mentioned by other users, about a 20 mins walk - though we recommend you allow at least 30 mins. The tours at Fan Bay start at 11am, running every half an hour, with the last of the day at 3pm. Current opening days for Fan Bay are Thursday-Monday.
Hope this helps.
