It is an archaeological site that is worth knowing. It is close to Tela viv. The ruins are impressive. You have to be prepared with a good hat and water. It is too hot

Bet Shean is a spectacular place to visit.
However....they only have pamphlets in Hebrew even though it is a major tourist attraction.
We found 2 audio presentations...1 was not working
There are a few signs around telling people what they are seeing( English and Hebrew), but minimal information and quite widely spaced

We were impressed with the massive expanse of ruins here. Lots of people as well, but with the size of the park, it didn't feel crowded. Good hike with a great view across the ruins from the entry; it's not as hard as it looks. Highly recommend.

This site was really amazing, one of the largest we have seen. It is a very old city that served the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans at various periods of history and was probably first settled 6,000 years ago. There is an amazing amphitheater and baths and a main "street" with massive columns. You can easily spend quite a bit of time exploring here.

Next stop after Belvoir Castle was another 45 minutes away at Bet She’an, a large Jewish/Hellenistic/Roman/Byzantine town that was abandoned after being destroyed by an earthquake in the 8th century.

We parked there – it was a lot busier than Belvoir – and headed inside. By now we were quite hungry so made the mistake of going straight to the cafe/gift shop at the same time as 2 coach loads of American tourists. After about 20 minutes we paid for our healthy breakfast of Magnum and almonds and sat outside, looking over the excavated city.

Most of the remains in the lower city were of the Roman/Byzantine period and were of very high quality, this was no provincial backwater (although I have never heard of it before). First stop was the theatre, of which only the lower tier of seats remain so there would have been two more layers of seats above what is there now. There were also lots of ornately carved collonades although these had not been restored to their correct places yet.

After the theatre we crossed the main street to the baths complex. This had mosaic floors for a lot of the areas and the baths themselves had extensive hypocaust heating systems. From here our route led us down Palladius Street, between rows of columns and then into a commercial area with more mosaic flooring. We ambled through the rest of the city, a lot of which is still in the process of being excavated.

Deb then sat in the shade of some palms while muggins climbed the steps to the Tel – mound – of the original city. This was inhabited as far back as 4000 BC apparently and was an Egyptian administrative centre around 1600BC. There are allegedly remains of a fort constructed by King David but whether that is a case of starting with the answer you want and providing evidence to match or not I couldn’t say. The Tel certainly gave good views over the newer city but there was very little to see there if you weren’t an archeologist. So Deb had the right idea.

I climbed back down the steps and we walked through the city again, past more tumbled columns, to the gift shop. We had a coffee while looking over the city for the final time and then returned to the car.

What an amazing place! Definitely a hidden treasure. We went late in the afternoon and were the only people there! The only thing I did not like were the cartoonish cutouts, maybe 5 total, spread in the ruins.
We found the place where it looked like the pieces that did not yet have a place to go were stored, such incredibly beautiful carvings in the stone.

Definitely one of the Top 5 archeological sites in Israel.

It is big, a lot to see, a lot to walk, and to climb also, a lot to learn and a lot to enjoy.

But be careful: in Summer the site might be dangerous if you forget yourself as there is no shade at all (or almost) and you can get dehydrated very easily.
So in Summer take plenty of water with you (1-2liter/person), your hat, sunglasses are mandatory as the stone are white and will eventually hurt your eyes, and finally some sunscreen.
Staying there at noon in Summer (from May till October) should be planned with caution.

But then the reward is awesome, just take a look at the pictures :)
