I've visited NW Lake Riding Stables twice now. Once with my husband, and recently with family visiting from out of town. Both times were memorable and positive experiences. For my recent visit, my cousin and I did the 2-hour tour, arriving at 1:30 for the half hour safety lecture with Cindy, followed by horseback riding from 2-4 with Mike. Safety is a priority here and hard helmets are provided and strongly recommended, but optional. We wore the helmets, and paid for the add-on photo cd. Mike brought his camera and took a million photos of us riding up hills, through forests, over bubbling creeks, through brush, under alternating sun and dappled tree shade, and gazing at gorgeous hill and mountain views. Horses are assigned per your experience level. Pouches on horse allow for the transport of small lightweight items like water bottles and car keys. Upon completion of our ride, Mike helped us dismount safely and gave us carrots to share with our horses. In every way, Cindy and Mike and their wonderful horses gave us a wonderful experience.

My children and I booked a ride back in August of 2014. We were novice riders and made sure to let them know this right away. They gave us very little direction other than stop, start, and how to turn. Mike took us on a long ride. I several times pointed out that my son was not on horse straight and slumped to one side. He never seemed to care and did nothing about it. On way back we were going downhill a lot and horses wanted to trot which was very difficult. Toward end of ride my horse took off on me for no reason. Horse was charging as fast as he could despite my pulling on reigns and yelling whoa. He finally threw me. Mike came up to me and never asked if I was okay, never got off horse, never tried to help. I had to ask him to please call ambulance. He then took my children back to the stables and left me laying all alone in gravel road waiting for help. Due to location, we waited over half hour for ambulance. I spent many days in hospital and still have lasting injuries. I had multiple breaks in clavicle, punctured and deflated lung, injured pancreas, and severe abrasions all down the side of my body. None of the staff ever asked if I needed anything. They just left me lying in road. 4 days later they finally called to see if I was okay. I have never been offered any help with my enormous amount of doctor bills, no compensation for the trauma caused to me and my children and I still need to have another surgery. Even worse yet, they still continue to use this horse that did this and they still train horses to run back to stables when they decide they are done to get spoiled and get their treat. I have never seen so little compassion for a customer that could have literally died while laying in the road due to their negligence.

I’m sitting here trying to think of the best way to express my thoughts and feelings that is respectful and compassionate to you, and also helps you understand the inherent risk in horseback riding. It’s very difficult. I’m sad that after two years, this incident still has had such a powerful influence over your life. I’m disappointed that you continue to attempt to slander us, and hurt our reputation. I’m angry that your perception of this incident has probably had a profoundly negative impact on your children; not only instilling a fear or distrust of horses, but also for providing a distorted filter for them to view the world. From the moment you arrived you bore no responsibility. You were 30 min late because of construction (the same construction you drove through the day before), yelling at me that you’d better still be able to ride even though you hadn’t even called to tell us you were going to be late. Our policy states that if you’re late for your ride, you’ve missed the ride, and do not get a refund. We have a set schedule; it’s an important policy for us. However, it was a slow day with no scheduling conflicts, and I could tell you were distressed, so we decided to waive the policy and take you out riding for the full amount of time without a penalty. Your reservation was made for 3 adults, not 1 adult and 2 children, and you yelled at me saying you had called and told us there were two children. The reservation was made on-line, through a third party, there were no phone calls. Again however, it was a relatively easy fix. We had to catch, groom, and saddle two child-appropriate horses, instead of the two extra adult-appropriate horses that were already prepared. While the guides were busy getting the other horses ready, I gave the riding and safety orientation in the office. I do cover “left, right, stop, and go”, as well as basics about horses, trail conditions, safety measures, and as many other things as I can within that 30 minute time frame. When we went out to the horses, we helped each of you mount, adjusted your stirrups, and made sure you knew how to tell the horse to go left, right, stop, and go. We made sure you knew where to hold on, and what to do if you needed help. I even spent extra time with you going over things once you were on the horse, so the guide was entertaining the kids and talking about their favorite characters on Adventure Time. The kids and the guide were laughing and having fun. They were comfortable with him, and knew to ask him for any help. Throughout the ride the guide stopped at specific points to check and make sure everyone was ok and comfortable. No one expressed any concerns or discomfort. Everyone was having fun. There are times when the horses naturally change gaits for a few steps at a time when going up or down hills, or to catch up if they’ve lagged behind. What equestrians everywhere know, and what we try to communicate through the website, emails, signs, and through the safety talk is that there is an inherent risk when you are riding, or even around horses. Horses have their own minds, and as a result are amazingly unique, thoughtful, expressive and aware. They’re aware of many things humans can’t hear, see, or smell. They have independent thought and personalities. When you have two independent minds trying to work together (horse and rider), there are times when each does something the other doesn’t expect. That is the nature of being with horses, and the inherent risk. Your horse started to trot a few steps. You pulled back on the reins so hard that he stopped short. You bounced in the saddle, lost your balance, and fell off. The horse did nothing wrong. He acted like a horse. Yes, we still use him. He is a wonderful, dependable, gentle horse. Out of countless rides, hundreds of people, and dozens of children, you have the distinction of being the only guest to ever fall off of him. I don’t think there's a problem with the horse. He’s awesome. Your other concern was with the guide not immediately jumping down. That would have been the least safe thing he could have done. He was still responsible to make sure your horse safely cleared the scene, and responsible for the safety of your children who were also on horseback. One guide stayed with you, and the on-site guide took the children. Your kids said they were hungry. They said they were in such a rush that morning to check out, since it was the last day of your vacation, that they hadn’t had time for breakfast. Our guide fed them, gave them water, and made sure they felt safe and comfortable. I spoke with your family multiple times in the next few days. I could go on and on about all of the things we did right, all of the procedures we followed, and debate endlessly about inaccurate details in your review, but see no benefit in doing so; anyone who has ridden with us knows the heavy emphasis we place on safety, and the care we take with our guests. Our mission at Northwestern Lake Riding Stables is to promote a deeper relationship between horses and their riders by providing a safe, comfortable, and fun riding experience; however, accidents can happen. While we have many protocols in place to prevent accidents, we also have procedures in the event of an emergency, including liability insurance that meets or exceeds state and federal requirements. Even though all of the protocols and procedures were followed, it is clear that you feel either we did not demonstrate the highest level of care and concern for your well-being and personal safety , and/or that we did not properly inform you of the hazards of horseback riding . For this, I sincerely apologize.

We were able to make reservations the same day and received an email with tips, driving instructions, confirmation and receipt within minutes. The directions were so easy to follow. My 3 children and I took the Buckaroo ride (ages 14, 12, 9 years old) which is an hour long and perfect for beginners. My children had never ridden before but I have had some experience many years ago. The staff was EXCELLENT at giving my children riding instructions before we mounted the horses as well as tips about the quirks and personalities of each horse they were assigned. It made such a big difference! They were wonderful at keeping my sulky teenage boy engaged and the horse/rider pairings couldn't have been better. Knowing that your horse is prone to stop and eat everything green along trail and what to do when he does makes such a big difference to a 9 year-old first time rider or that your horse loves to toss her mane in the wind for the entire trek back to the stables (don't be alarmed she's not upset she just loves play in the breeze). The trails were alive with green, flowers, shallow creeks we crossed and even a small water-fall. The horses were well behaved but just enough personality and energy to feel like we were really riding and in control. Mike and Teagan were our guides and gave us lots of opportunities to ride a bit faster than a walk while checking to make sure we were comfortable with it. I have never seen my children smile and laugh so much! We will definitely be back in the near future!

My husband and I had such a wonderful time at the NW Lake Riding Stables. This was my gift to my husband even though neither of us have any riding experience. As a result I was quite nervous but Cindy and Mike really helped me get past my fears. The ride is through the most beautiful country. Mike led us and he knew to keep a nice easy pace. Our horses were great too. And their dog, Oreo, ran along the whole way! We really had a great time. I highly recommend it.

They matched our capabilities with appropriate horses. We had an energetic ride in the Cascade mountains, through the timberland. The views were awesome and the ride was so worth it!

We were staying in Hood River and feel lucky that we found Northwestern Lake Riding Stables, 1262 Little Buck Creek Road, White Salmon, WA. It was just15 minutes away and felt like a true adventure into the woods. Our family of 4 (two adult children) had a great time on the adventure trail, where the horses went into a nice trot up the hills and were sure footed on the way down. It was a great way to see the cascades! I highly recommend this stable. They were professional, provided very detailed instructions, and had wonderful, well cared for horses. We may go back this week for another ride!

Cindy gave a very thorough introduction on riding and safety measures. Horses are well cared for and extremely well behaved. This is a first rate operation. The trail riding was scenic and fun. There were hills, stream crossings, mud, etc to liven up the ride. Hope to return some day!

The owners/guides are knowledgeable, caring, warm people who keep us coming back every year! The horses are great listeners, easy to ride, very sweet and absolutely beautiful! The trails are fun, exciting, yet safe and well maintained, and provide beautiful views of Mt. Hood and the White Salmon area.
Whether you're an experienced rider or a first-timer, these guys tailor the experience to you and even match up the horses' personalities to the riders!
Highly recommend these guys and will be coming back for more!
