My Brother and I have been fishing with Westport Charters for about 5 years. We've fished on the Tornado all those years. This last year I did an extra Trip in August and was on the Cormorant. We've gotten limits of rockfish every trip with a few ling cod in the mix, but mostly Rockfish. There have been years that we only got one Salmon and My brother and I split it taking home one fillet each. other years we got one each or some silvers. either way we come home with fish. There has never been issues with equipment or leaders either.
The reason we pick the COMBO trip is that we know we will always come home with fish. We've heard of people leaving the motel with no fish at all. That IS after all why its called FISHING.
You can take your fish to Merino's to have them processed, but they have to stay overnight. The cost is reasonable for processing, but we vacuum pack them ourselves. One thing I DO NOT recommend is doing the TUNA EXCHANGE. It's a rip off and what they charge per can is outrageous. take them home and do it yourself. Want tuna sandwiches? bake your tuna then flake it into a bowl. much easier.
We also tip the deck hand $40. He works hard and fillets your rockfish or salmon while heading back to port.
Another tip buy Bonine its an ant-inausea Med. take one the night before and one before getting on the boat. Don't Drink Coffee either, use something else to wake you up instead that is easier on the stomach. If you are really sensitive ask your doctor for Scopolamine Patches. Put one behind your ear the day before and also do the Bonine (Dramamine and Benedryl cause you to be sleepy) Bring Mild foods like Sandwiches, chicken, chips, soda fruit etc.
Also wear a pair of shoes that are waterproof with good rubber soles. The boat rocks a lot at times and the fish are piled on the deck at times before using the hose to clean it. So ankle high boots at least are helpful but tennis shoes are ok too.
Dress in layers. I've seen the weather go from down right freezing to T-shirt weather in no time even in July. A pair of gloves helps too. Your hands will get wet and thumbs sore from holding down the spool as you let out line, so bring a pair that has textured palms but is flexable. I always check in the night before to save the rush in the morning with your license etc.
NOW Book early to get your motel and the dates you want and come have a great time with a great team.

This was an excellent trip on the Sea Angel, Captain Brian Birante and his brother Robert as deck hand were the hardest working crew I have ever had the pleasure to charter with. Not only did they do an excellent job tending to everyone, they were friendly and engaging. They told stories and treated the guests like friends. My friend fought a large King Salmon for quite a while and it finally slipped the hook, She deflated after fighting such a good fish then losing it. Robert told her she did everything right and that losing the fish was not her fault. Hearing that from her made her feel better. We had to let a lot of wild salmon go but we still filled the limit and everyone took two salmon home. Robert fileted the fish for us. They maintain a clean and organized boat. These guy are top shelve and I recommend they whole heartily. I am looking forward to chartering with them again .

According to Westport Charters, a 'combo' trip is for those who can't decide which fish to target. I was more than willing to sign up as I love fishing for both. What was not clear until I was on the boat is that bottom fishing only includes targeting of rockfish, no ling fishing was done. I was disappointed but looked forward to salmon fishing after our limits of rockfish.
The equipment we fished with was substandard. My friend had to ask multiple times for a reel change. His was not working properly. He was given one reluctantly. While I got a nice king, we both lost fish to faulty leaders and we were not the only customers to experience this on our trip.
I don't recommend the combo trip unless you want to pay an extra $60-$70 for little rock fish filets and ultimately spending less time catching more sporting fish. The combo trip duration was actually shorter than salmon only charters I've used in the past.
My concerns were first ignored by their office. Then their response was, 'feel free to go elsewhere'. In the future I will.

Captain Dwight and Jake the deckhand are the best! Jake is absolutely the best deckhand I have ever seen. Good with old people like me and good and patient with kids. We piled on the cod and caught a few salmon too. Jake did an awesome job bagging and tagging our catch on the way in. The Tornado is smooth riding and I didn’t feel queasy at all. Best boat and crew by far! Dwight came out and helped us out too. Can’t say enough good about these guys.

I had probably the most fun I have ever had in my adult life. These guys were polite, professional, and very very good at getting on fish. Captain Brian and his deckhand Robert were absolutely great.
This was my first charter and I guarantee you it will NOT be my last

We couldn't have asked for a better trip! My 3 sons and I went out on the Tornado with Captain Dwight and Jake.. What an amazing experience! I am still in awe of how fast and precise Jake was at cleaning & filleting our fish.. and all the while keeping our lines ready to drop. Captain Dwight is a great guy and had us all at ease out at sea.. He was very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Capt. Dwight found us the fish and we all limited out ~ He is a great guy!
We are already looking at the calendar for next year on the Tornado, we cant wait!
Thanks Dwight and Jake for a memorable experience!

Have used Westport Charters in the past. Easy to sign up, schedule on web to help you with dates and trips, multiple boat options, friendly, helpful crews.
We had a two day bottom fishing trip on two boats. Limits on both days, but big difference in weight. First day with Sea Angel was good. Limited on rock fish in an hour, rest of the day was spent trying to get our limit of Ling. Hit it around 12:30 and were back to the shore around 2. Total in filets was 23 lbs for the two of us. Good time, good boat, good service. We just caught a lot of small/medium sized fish.
Second day on Hula Girl was even better. Went for Ling first, deeper water than previous day by far. Limit for boat reached in under an hour with about half the boat catching at least one 15+ lb fish. Motored to another spot for rockfish, limited @ 10:45 and with bigger fish on average. Total weight for the two of us on day 2 was 41 lbs, almost double the first day. Certainly most of that was bigger Lings, but also had about 2 lbs more rockfish each.
In comparison, last year on Hula Girl, 4 of us went and averaged about 14 lbs each. While the captain said “ sometimes the fish make us look real smart”, I do think he and Jason (son and deck hand) make a great team and work hat to make sure everyone enjoys their trip.

My husband and I went out on the Tornado with Captain Dwight and deckhand Jake. Both are great, they are constantly working to make sure things are going smoothly, to ensure everyone gets there full limit of fish. We did get our limits of fish both days we went out. Captain Dwight put us on top of the fish and told us how to drop our lines to get the fish. Deckhand Jake kept our lines loaded with bait and then got the fish off. On the way back to port Jake cleaned the catch with speed and expertise that was truly impressive. We are planning on going again in September.

I took my son and 19 year old grandson out on the Sea Angel for a day of rockfish lingcod fishing and we had a BLAST!!
we all limited and were very pleased with the Sea Angel and crew (captain Brian Mirante and his brother Robert as deckhand). I've never seen guys work so hard on a fishing charter - and I've been on a lot of charters in my time. Both were very friendly and made sure all anglers were taken care of at all times. Their boat was very clean and they kept it that way as day progressed. We were so pleased that my son and I have ready booked another trip for early August. Can hardly wait!!

we would like charters for ling cod, halibut, rock fish and salmon. We are willing to do multiple days. What is the best time of year for fishing these types of fish? We are looking at July and August.
Is the Discovery going to be a charter boat this year? Will Dave Camp still be the captain?
The Discovery was sold and relocated to California. Dave has retired.

$140 weekdays and $150 weekends. Plus the $6 to $10 fillet fees and if they did an excellent job, I always tip on top of that.
