We stopped here on our way to the Neuse River Recreation Area. There is a small pull-off area near the road to park. Being in the woods I suggest you wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the walk. To do the entire loop it took my family approximately 30 minutes. The posted trail map was illegible which was slightly concerning to me but we gave it go anyways.
The path is marked and the signs are fairly easy to follow but get a little confusing towards the middle portion at the creek. It is wide enough for two people to walk next to each other most of the way but there are a few places single file was best. There are also 15 or 16 signs made to label various trees and plants in the area.
We did not see any animals but we heard different birds and there were flying insects such as beetles and dragonflies which my children found entertaining. Some creaky trees added to the ambiance. We were completely surrounded by green and tall trees blocked out most of the sun for majority of the walk but it was pleasant and not dark by any means. Eventually you will come to a creek that is indeed tannin colored as described. The scenery was breathtaking if you are a lover of nature like me. The path then loops back around towards the road and you will be back to the parking area within 15 at an easy pace.
I am 8 months pregnant and have 2 bad knees which require me to wear braces but this path was relatively flat and easy with a 10 year old and a 15 year old. I would watch out for roots across the path as the majority of it is crisscrossed with roots of the trees. My children tripped running ahead of me several times but I paid much more attention to wear my feet were landing and due to my medical condition it is physically impossible for me to go anywhere in a hurry. I did not need them to give me a hand up or down any inclines but we stayed on the path (which should give you and idea of the difficulty considering I need help from sitting to standing and in and out of the truck on a regular basis).
I was pleasantly surprised with this little gem. This was my first walk in a few weeks as I have had to use my walker lately so it was really nice to get out and get some fresh air with my children. I found the walk to be visually stunning and serene.
Bring your own water as there is no source here.
Also there are other unlabeled unmarked paths that veer of the main designated area. We did not follow any of these and when we got confused slightly we noticed there are white paint marks on the trees and followed those along with the labeled trees back to the parking area. I would think an hour at max at this site would be sufficient as there is no where to sit down for a spell and have a picnic or benches to linger longer on the path.
Not far from Jacksonville or New Bern and access to "civilization" and all the conveniences of a town. We did not encounter any other people during our time here and had cellular signal the whole time if you are concerned about safety.

This hike reminded me of Goose Creek State Park, but with a black creek running through it. We loved it. No bugs in April. There are good signs almost the whole way, but if you stop seeing the signs that the Boy Scouts have made for the various types of trees, then you have probably strayed off the loop. The loop goes along the creek for a while, but then it turns away and another trail continues along the creek. The creek trail goes on for miles according to another hiker we met. Great place to get away from it all.

This is not a walk that will end in some sort of grand view it is a walk that allows you to see God's handy work and view some rare plants and trees. It is not a long walk so most can take it. Be sure to bring a lunch basket and picnic on the ground along the trail. My wife and I love to take this hike during each season so we can see all of the beauty in it's time.

The trail is very easy to walk, there are a lot of tree roots in the path that can trip you if you are not paying attention. It's only 1/2 mile in length.

The husband and I took our 11 month old son on this short and simple hike. It took us a while to find the trailhead and the directions on trip advisor took us through some back country roads that were not paved. The trail is very simple and supposed to be a loop but part of the trail is under water. Make sure you bring good bug spray because the mosquitoes will swarm!

Short, moderate trail, with white markings on trees to follow. Took us approximately 30-45min to hike, trailed along large creek.

What's better than enjoying nature? Take the time too relax and enjoy a nice easy walk. Be sure to use some bug spray and check for ticks when you leave.

Yup, my friend isn't much for hiking. Actually it's a walk. The trees, plant life, creek, sounds, mushrooms, sounds, quiet, easy to follow trails made it worth it for both of us.

Trail was easy to find, parking lot was empty on the week day morning. According to my Fitbit we hiked 5 miles in and out. The water was high so when we got to the stream crossing on the blazed trail the trail went way under water so we hung a left and followed the in marked but obvious trail along the steam until we had seen enough and the backtracked to the parking lot. Very beautiful woods and swamp. Bring bug spray.
