We visited Duluth this fall specifically to check out the migrating raptors at Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve, reputed as “one of the great hawk flyways of the world”. Migrating birds of prey head south from Canada and follow Minnesota’s North Shore coastline rather than flying directly across wide Lake Superior. Their migratory was long known to locals and hunters used to take advantage of their predictable routes. The Duluth Bird Bird club managed to stop this practice and organized the first hawk count 60 years ago in 1951. Banding and formal systematic hawk counts began in 1972. From just a few days count in September the hawk count now starts in late August and lasts into November.

The observatory and hawk count are at a specific location on the East Skyline Parkway above the coastline, within the nature reserve. We came up from Chicagoland for both fall colors and especially the chance to see different raptors in large numbers. The number of migrating raptors on a specific day is highly-dependent on the weather, especially the wind. Numbers are highest when the winds are blowing from the north and west. We were fortunate to have clear days and good winds. On the first day we showed up quite early to start our watch as we had gotten accustomed to early starts when birding. It turned out that that the prime time for catching the migration was late morning to early afternoon. Nevertheless there were already several birders set up at the roadside and the official spotters were hard at work from their overlook platform. As it turned out arriving a little too early was not a bad thing as we got to park close to the observatory; when we left that afternoon cars were parked on both sides of the road for quite a distance away.

If you’re an experienced birder you will already have your binoculars. If not, definitely bring a pair when visiting during the migration. If you are serious about trying to take pictures of the raptors be sure to bring the most powerful zoom lens your camera system has (or rather your particular budget allows). A mobile phone camera will just not do. Even at a maximum zoom of 600mm focal length many of my shots were dots shaped like birds.

My wife and I had just started birding this year and it has been heart-warming to be part of the community that shares info and tips. We experienced that at the “Magic Hedge” in Montrose Point in Chicago, and again here at Hawk Ridge Observatory. There were clear regulars calling out “Sharpy low by the golf course” and “Red tail above us” and “Roughy at 3 o’clock” referring to sharp-shinned hawks, red-tailed hawks, and rough-legged hawks respectively. We had done a little research as to identifying raptors in flight by their wing and tail silhouettes but it was much tougher in real life. The regulars quickly ID’d us as newbies and a couple of them made sure to direct our searches in the right direction and helped us identify the raptors.

Most raptors were high above us or far below close to the shoreline riding the winds and thermals. We did spot several congregations of raptors - often different species - known as “kettles”, swirling together as they rode rising columns of air to gain altitude. A significant amount of time was spent with our necks straining as we looked up, but every now and then a raptor would fly past almost at eye-level. The official spotters often called down to us at the roadside to inform us of incoming raptors.

While the observatory was dedicated to hawks there were many other migrating birds to be seen, including flocks of sandhill cranes and American white pelicans.

The observatory staff held several educational programs each day of the weekend we visited. At the roadside just below the official viewing platform was a white board with a running tally of hawks spotted; on one of ours days they had spotted 277 red-tailed hawks, 141 sharp-shinned hawks, 73 turkey vultures, 65 bald eagles, 6 Cooper hawks, 5 rough-legged hawks, 3 American kestrels, 2 Northern harriers, and 1 broad-winged hawk all before noon.

A pair of F-16 Falcons did a fly-by one morning, which was an interesting twist. There were no F-15 Eagles or F-22 Raptors, however, on the weekend we were there.

We did not spend our entire day there but hiked around the nature preserve to stretch our legs, enjoy the fall colors and to make the most of other perspectives on the hawk migration.

You do not have to be a dedicated birder to appreciate what happens here in the fall and it is definitely worth visiting for an hour or two in the middle of the day if you are visiting the area. From a birding perspective, though, this was an amazing experience for us.

One of the places that interested us was Hawk Ridge. This is an observation area for migrating birds. Apparently due to the proximity of the Lake and the currents up the cliffs, this is an area through which numerous varieties of birds migrate. The numbers of all types of birds is significant. As we walked from our car to the observation area, we met up with a young woman who in involved with the Observatory. She provided us with all sorts of information about the birds that migrate through. It was really neat to talk with her.

We went to the observation area and began looking for birds. There were quite a few people there (20 to 30). They were really into bird watching. As we were there, two Sandhill Cranes flew by. There was a board identifying how many birds had flown by today. And surprisingly there were over 50 eagles. This proved to be a real surprise visit. Glad we stopped by.

We visit this area with 2 kids and it probably wasn't the best choice. I think you need some time to sit and enjoy the quiet to see any of the hawks, and we only spent about 15 minutes here. If you continue to drive, you will reach 7 bridges road, and that's very scenic. I'd love to visit this area again in the fall to really appreciate the beauty of this area.

Due to weather and cloud cover - saw beautiful view but no birds today. Was encouraged to drive out through the 7bridges road and it was lovely color and worth the ride. Thanks for the suggestion from the docent!

We only saw one hawk on our recent visit but we’ve been here in Oct. when we could see them circling overhead by the dozens. Still the views were worth the stop and there are several short trails. In the fall there are often naturalists doing educational talks and showing birds up close.

Set in the bluffs overlooking the north shore of Lake Superior, this scenic overlook is best known as THE spot to watch birds flying south on their autumnal migration. Every day during this time there are bird-spotters hunkered down here to count the birds: raptors, song birds, bald eagles - you see them all. If you don't bring your own binoculars, you can borrow some to see the live action. Plus, there will be special programs - most are free - going on during the day and evening to better understand the bird culture. It's a perfect outing for the kids. Pack your own water and picnic.
