If you're into genealogy or even if you're not, this is an interesting place to get a sense of Plymouth history.

This is a very solemn site as it is one of the oldest European burial grounds in America. Unfortunately, they need money for restoration and interpretation. There was trash strewn around on one of the days that we went. There were many markers that could not be read. There were dumb tourists rubbing many markers which can harm the old markers. It is a historic cemetery but I guess Plymouth doesn't have the budget to keep it up because it was in sad state. An example of an excellent cemetery is Belfontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri for history and preservation. Plymouth was pretty cool but it could be better if it took better care of the cemetery.

This is the actual location of the cemetery for pilgrims and other early settlers of Plymouth. "Original site" locations were (mostly) well marked and we found several graves of famous Pilgrims.

This is a tough walk but has pretty views once up top. The headstones are very difficult to read and a brochure that tells where to find certain people would have been helpful. We didn't find one, but there may be one somewhere.

The cemetery is very interesting but did not feel safe with the homeless that were hanging out behind the church and in the cemetery. Pretty sure there were drug deals being made. I was just trying to find my ancestors. Decided it wasn't worth my safety.

It was a pleasant experience seeing how this is so old yet so well taken care of. You see enough to know of some of the ones buried there but the tombstones are so worn from the years of being there almost impossible to read. There was restoration going on by two young men some of the tombstones like putting them back in the ground if they fell out of place. So nice a spot to look out not the town.

The earliest grave markers were of craved wood which didn't long, with stone markers started in the mid-1650's. Theoldest known grave is 1681, with lastest burial in 1957. A few of the names are:
William Bradford-Pilgrim & Governor.
William Brewster-Church elder.
Thomas Prence-Colonial Governor.
Zabdiel Sampson.- Congressman.
James Warren- Patriot Leader.

The hill's height is 165 feet in height with a network paved footpaths throughout the cemetery's five acres, with more than 2,000 markers. Climing the stairs might be a problems some visitors, however at the cement stairs has a middle railingto hold onto, while the red brick steps has a railing on each side of the steps.

I would esitmate that at least that one quarter of the stones are so old, they are unreadable. The two main red brick stairway are off School Street are in being installed. The grass is well mowed. Much of the hill hsas good shade trees.

Overall the monuments'memorials, readable stones, the paved pathways and cemeter's layout a visit is well worth the time. Front the cemetery's top a visitor will get a good view of the the Plymouth's harbor eastward.

A visit of any length of time is recommender.

NOTE: There NO GPS address. Whilevisiting the Grist Miil, I asked about the cemetery's location. One woman informed me the following:
1. Turn Right out of the mill.
2. Walkup to Summer Street-100 yards at most.
3. Cross summer Street to the Burial Hill Arch that will lead to an asphalt walkway.
4. The walkway will leads to a cement staircase.
5. Follow the steps to the hill's top.
I left my vehicle in the mill's parking lot.

My husband had ancestors who came over on the Mayflower, and some of them were buried on Burial Hill. We were able to find their memorial very easily and to see their original gravestone. It was an absolutely incredible experience, and just mind blowing when you think about how old many of those grave sites are. It was so worth the visit.

After visiting Church of the Pilgrimage UCC and First Parish Church of Plymouth, we went to nearby Burial Hill.

As I walked the sidewalk to get an overview, there was a boulder with a plaque near the edge of the sidewalk. I was taken aback by the inscription on the plaque. It marked the site of the original Plymouth home of John Alden before he moved to Duxbury. The cemetery must have been established after he and Priscilla moved away.

With a name like Burial Hill, one would expect that many of the Pilgrims would be buried there. That was not the case. Initially, that was Fort Hill; and, people weren’t buried there until after the fort was abandoned. Only about a dozen Pilgrims are there.

Even the monument to Governor William Bradford wasn’t installed until 1835 – some 178 years after his death in 1657. And, the inscription states that Bradford’s ashes are buried under the monument.

The granite tombs not far from the sidewalk date from the 1800’s.
The powder house we see today dates from 1920. It was built on the site of the original.

Burial Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

My visit here was curtailed as my friend had no interest at all in this cemetery and went to the car.

For its historical significance and relatively well-preserved condition, I rate Burial Hill at 4.0 and recommend a visit there and to the two historic churches nearby.

This is a very interesting cemetery, partly because of the history, obviously, but it is different. It is a real hill with graves sloping down from the top to bottom. The gravestones are so unusual and very old. Reading the epitaphs is interesting, too. I love cemeteries and this is one that was on my bucket list. So glad we went! We saw it at night with the Ghost Tour which really gave good history on it and explained it well and the Pilgrim's Progress walk, plus during the day where we just meandered along. It is very shaded, too. For a less taxing walk up the hill, go in the back way off Russell Street. There is a two-hour free parking lot there and the walk up is much easier.
