We greatly enjoyed our guided tour of the First State Heritage park, the central historic district of Wilmington, Delaware. Rachel, our guide, provided a very comprehensive overview of the historical sites and the many interesting men and women who contributed to the story of Delaware. Highly recommended!

We are retired and have a goal to visit as many state capitals as we can. Our trip to Dover, Delaware was very pleasant! The city has an area in the center of town which has been restored to the appearance of the Colonial/Revolutionary period with brick sidewalks, large tree-lined greens, and the old state government buildings. It is very walkable with ample free parking along the street. We toured the Old State House, and Legislative Hall (current State Capital building) and took a Walking Tour around the historic area. All of our tour guides very friendly and informative. You could tell they love history. We especially had a nice chat with Madison ('Madi"), our guide for the Walking Tour. Ask for her, if you go. Our Old State House guide was Tom Welch who was so nice he even gave us a ride back to our car because it was raining. We found Dover to be a small, clean and friendly city.

A really nice place to learn more Colonial American history, as well as more recent history. I started at the Visitor Center which has some small interesting exhibits and then I walked around to the other sites where staff and/or volunteers gave tours/talks about the history of each place. Really knowledgeable folks presented the information. The state employee who was at the John Bell house gave a great walking tour. Very animated and engaging. One of the early Dover residents he talked about was James Tilton. I hope you have a chance to get this same empoyee giving the tour. He made James Tilton come to life! I smiled and laughed a lot because of this guy's enthusiasm for the subject. He really knew his history, and it was so much fun listening to his tour.

We stumbled upon Rachel giving another guest the tour around the square. We joined at the end and then she went around the square again with us. She gave us lots of the history surrounding Delaware's role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the signing and ratification of the Constitution.
After walking the square with Rachel we then caught the 11:00 am tour of the First State House. Rachel gave us enough background information so that we could better appreciate what we saw and heard in the State House. It was definitely a good thing to do the outside walking tour first, then go in to the State House.
After touring the State House, we told Rachel about our wonderful experience with her and asked her, and her supervisor, about what to do next. One suggested the Johnson Victrola Museum, the other the John Dickinson Plantation. The Victrola Museum was fantastic. We walked back up to the square and gave them a report. We had enough time so we then went out to the John Dickinson Plantation. We made the right choice in going to the Victrola Museum.

Arrived at the green at 4pm not expecting anything and stumbled upon this sweet tour focusing on prominent women of the time. (The tour content changes regularly.) Our guide Steve was dressed in period clothing and was wonderful-clearly passionate about his job! You’ve got to advertise this free tour better so more people catch it!!

All of my travels take me to NPS sites across the country. I waited several years for the First State Heritage Park to get organized prior to visiting. The Green is beautiful and I am thrilled these building and homes have been preserved but I am disappointed in the lack of organization on the part of NPS. I visited all 6 sites that are part of the First State. There are few to no signs indicating these locations are part of the NPS. Only about half had the park brochure available and open times and passport stamp locations shared online were incorrect. The tour I took specifically at the The Green was conducted by a high school student in training. She was accompanied by a more seasoned tour guide. When giving historical tours, two things are important. 1) Getting the facts (dates, places, people) accurate and 2) good story-telling abilities. Part of being a good story teller is the ability to take people back in time. So, although Generation Z may appreciate historical figures being referred to as "dudes", as someone part of Generation X, I do not. Please take the time to consider your audience and give the respect that is deserved to these people who built our country.

Check their schedule due to covid, but pre covid, this was a great opportunity to participate in Ghost walks, historical interpretations, colonial events, and all kinds of fun stuff for kids and adults.

In what some call the first urban park this is a great area full of history, restored buildings and tours to learn more about the first state’ large open green space with a ton of room for a picnic or to just enjoy a leisurely stroll. Easy parking.
Tip: Admission to all sites is free!

We traveled here with our travel trailer in tow and while there is parking at the visitor center you need to get there early as there were not really any spaces for oversized vehicles. The website had led us to believe there was more space and the staff inside was unaware of any other place to park oversized vehicles. That being said, we found a spot but we wouldn't have wanted to be there much later than opening. Once there we spent a little time in the visitor center and then headed to the Green. Our first stop was the Old StateHouse. We did not expect a guided tour but were pleasantly surprised to find a docent there who was more than happy to show us around and teach us so much about Delaware. I can not say enough how informative he was! He took us into every room and we got so much more out of our visit because of him. We then went to the John Bell house where tours of the Green and it's structures start. The young woman there was so kind and accommodating. We explained we didn't have time to do the entire tour and, since we were the only group there, she offered to give us an abbreviated walking tour so we could get a taste of the history of this important area. Again, she was very informative and made sure to hit all the highlights including Caesar Rodney and the Golden Fleece Tavern. This was a great stop and the staff so friendly and helpful we would like to come back and spend more time. Everyone working there seemed to truly love their job and the state.

We got to learn about Delaware's history, and take a very nice stroll around. The weather was perfect, so we really got to enjoy it all. I definitely want to come back.

I'm confused. Do we start at the First State Heritage Park Welcome Center or the Delaware State Museum Visitor Center? We want to tour the Old State House, Legislative Hall (Capitol Bldg.), Woodburn (where we have an appointment) and end up at the John Bell House for a walk around the Green.
Where should we park?
Thanks!

Thank you for your question! The best place to start is the First State Heritage Park Welcome Center & Galleries (121 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. N - formerly 121 Duke of York Street). The Delaware State Museum Visitor Center moved to its current location and the name was changed at the same time. There is plenty of free, all-day parking available there at the Welcome Center. If you need to drive between places, there is also on-street parking available - but with time restrictions.
If you ever want to tour any of our locations, you can call 302-739-9194 and we would be happy to create a customized schedule for you and your group - whether it is just one person, or several bus loads!
See you soon!
