Amazing, even if you feel it is expensive, if you are above 50,it is advisable you go. Otherwise there is lot of walking to do. By taking the train you get to see the beauty by relaxing your feet a little

We took the scenic route from Siliguri to Darjeeling - taking eight hours in total. First up the view from the train as it makes its way up the mountains is stunning. The diesel train took us through lush rainforest and beautiful towns perched on the side of steep cliffs.
There were two big disappointments though:
First: the carriage toilet was appalling. Strong stench of urine, cockroaches and no cleaning during the trip (despite the member of staff who rode with us).
Second: after lunch (which took the shape of a plastic tray that had dhal, rice and sauces) a fellow passenger decided to throw his rubbish (the entire plastic tray, spoon and lid!) out of the train and into the rainforest! None of the staff stopped him or stopped the train so he can retrieve his litter. I was appalled that this could be allowed to happen.

It was an heven like experience, travelled for 2days and enjoyed the whole hill station . I was like that I had seen snowfall there. And the memos with hot cup of tea. Best part of darjeeling is The te gardens and it's tea. The real flavor of raw tea leaves or liquor tea.

Do not go to Ropeway. Total waiting period is 3/4 hours. Total waste of time.
Local body should provide a lift to reach the ticket counter/entry point. It will give comfort to elders/person with knee problems.
Ropeway should start from 0800AM. It will benefit the tourist.

We expected this to be one of the highlights of our tour. It wasn't - here's why.
Other passengers had stowed their luggage on seats and our Guide had to remonstrate with train staff so we could occupy the seats we had booked.
Uncomfortable seats with little leg room. The plastic seat backs fronting us were filthy dirty.
Various delays meant the train took 2 hours to clear Siliguri.
We were just glad to get off at Darjeeling

Pathetic waste of money and a terrible experience. Take it if you want to view under construction concrete jungle, clothes drying with a few glimpses of the valley which are better had by cab or walking. To keep you awake the diesel fumes constantly fill the carriage.
At 1000rs a ticket (or 1,500 if you have opted for steam engine) this is a crime by UNESCO to have certified this as a heritage anything. Complete waste of time.
Spend your time wisely. If you want pics with the train, just visit the station for free.

We took the diesel-engine ride from Darjeeling railway station to Batasia Loop and Ghoom railway station and back to Darjeeling railway station on the morning of March 18. The first thing that struck me was the confusion we faced boarding the right carriage as two train runs had been clubbed into one and the signs were not clear as to who should board which carriage. Other than this confusion, the train ride was fine but the route it took was not. The train wound itself through a series of overcrowded shanty-like stretches that were plain ugly, the park inside Batasia Loop was equally bland and underwhelming and the Ghoom railway station was a grimy one. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Museum which was a part of the joyride was a crashing bore.

Hi All,
We are planning for a trip to Darjeeling later this year during Christmas time. I have a couple of questions and any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.
1) One day, we are planning to go to Tiger Hill in the morning, come back to our hotel (The Elgin), have breakfast and go for the toy train ride at 9:45 AM. Is it feasible?
2) I am trying to book the toy train tickets in the irctc portal. I read in multiple places, the station codes should be DJ (To) and DJRZ (From). Unfortunately, when I select these I get an error. But when I select Ghum as the destination, I am getting the ticket. I am unable to understand whether this is a one way ticket or is it the round trip and it's just a glitch in the portal (the price seems to be the same, INR 1000/person). Kindly help.
Thanks and regards,
Subhrendu

We plan to travel the whole length of the railway. Do the carriages have toilets? Do you have to take food and drink with you when you get on the train?

Yes, the coaches have toilets. But going all the way on the train will get repetitive and boring after a certain time. Food/snacks are available at the stations.
I want to book a try train, I want to know the name of station where i should start and stop. Please advise

It was running when I visited in April. I hear there is a lot of unrest there now. You may want to check about the timings now as they may have changed.
Thanks

The services from NJP to Darjeeling is not frequent and regular and hence you should check that from NJP station before booking any tickets.
The trip usually takes 7 hours.
