If you are looking for an incredible, personalized, intimate experience off the beaten track in Southern Africa, we can’t recommend Conservancy Safaris Namibia highly enough. My husband and I and two teenaged sons have been on multiple safaris (Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa), starting when the boys were 5 and 7, plus we’ve taken them to Sri Lanka, Australia, Thailand, Peru, and all over Europe (they are now 15 and 17). But when we left Namibia, my younger son said that this was the best trip we’ve EVER done.

CSN is a really special company, jointly owned by the local Himba and Herero communities and Dr. Margaret Jacobsohn, who started it with her late husband, Garth Owen-Smith, both world renowned conservationists. Since the death of Garth, the trips are now led by their longtime apprentice, Boaz Hambo, who was destined to be a local goat herder until he met and came under the wings of Garth and Maggy. Bottom line is that Boaz knows the land like the back of his hand, and he knows everyone and everyone knows him.

It’s really difficult to succinctly put into words just what a truly special, unique, beautiful, interesting, warm, and life-changing experience this was for all 4 of us. First of all, the landscape is so vast and varied and unlike anything we had seen before, in a land mass the size of Texas with around 2mil people. Secondly, you are pretty much off the grid for the duration of the trip once you leave Swakopmund, which was the first time in years for any of us, and allowed us to actually rest our minds and be in the present moment in a way that is generally otherwise impossible these days. Thirdly, while the density of the animal population is not what you will find in other countries like Kenya and Tanzania, the intimacy of being alone with a group of elephants or tracking a rhino on foot for a couple of hours (success!!) or going off in search of a pack of lions with the lion rangers guiding us into the bush from the top of our vehicle, is unparalleled. And we all agree that one of the most exciting sightings was some ostrich parents and their pack of around 40 babies!

From Boaz to Sonia (Boaz’ sister and CSN cook) to the support team, MC to Tjiposa, the team was outstanding, the landscapes and campsites each more spectacular as the last (including. “Prince William’s camp”, where yes, CSN took THAT Prince William), the connection with the Himbas and other locals so deep and special, the (successful!) search for animals always exciting, the food delicious, the stars, and the deep, peaceful quiet....

Our trip with CSN was simply wonderful on every level, and we are so lucky to have had the opportunity to participate in a small way in the conservation efforts that Maggy and Garth and so many others have been engaged in for so many years. We felt the deep loss for team (and Namibian conservation) as a result of Garth’s passing, but we are activated to help however we can to keep the momentum and their efforts alive. My husband and Boaz already mapped out our next trip before we even left, because we will get back there as soon as possible, and as a thank you and to stay connected, we are sponsoring the GOSCARS to recognize the hard work of the rangers on the ground working tirelessly to protect the animal population from poachers, which in addition to years of drought, is threatening this fragile ecosystem immensely. If you are looking for the experience of a lifetime, we cannot recommend CSN more highly.

An unbelievable experience. A safari out of this world. By using Conservancy Safaris, we were actively supporting the local people and felt that we were making a little bit of a difference, so needed after a long drought and Covid. Our tracker/ driver Boas is an expert in finding the most elusive animals (he found 3 Rhinos!), the support team excellent. Our tents were erected each night by the lovely support team and Sonia cooked the most delicious , fresh food out of her cooking pots. (One day she cooked the best lasagne I have ever eaten)! The areas we visited were remote, stunningly beautiful and we adapted well to the simple life, sleeping in tents, sitting around the campfire with a glass of wine in hand admiring the sunset. This is a truly memorable experience. If you enjoy wild camping, back to basic living surrounded by lovely people and stunning countryside, this safari is a must for you.

A safari with Conservancy Safaris is a life-changing experience. We last visited 12 years ago and it was very special to return after such a long gap. Boas, our guide is truly phenomenal with a deep knowledge of the Himba and Herero people. It was an honour to be the guests of the Himba and to gain further insights into their culture and the challenges they face. After many years of drought which was happily broken by rains last year the herdsmen have had a very rough time of it and it was particularly good to know that by joining this tour we were putting a little bit back where it was most needed. The wildlife is awesome and Boas is an expert tracker. If there’s an animal to be found, Boas will find it! However for us, the experience offered by Comservancy Safaris is truly authentic. There aren’t elephants and lion around every bend, but we saw plenty and it is much more rewarding when you have had to scour the bush to find the animals you are looking for. Meanwhile the scenery is quite simply stunning and incredibly varied.

Our camping support team were amazing. Every night we would arrive at our campsite with the tents all erected, the camp fire blazing and the sundowners ready. This would be shortly followed by an excellent meal prepared by Sonja, our fabulous chef - what she can produce with a few cooking pots on an open fire is extraordinary!

Many people contemplating such a trip might be fazed by the remote areas that are visited and the wild camping experience. Don’t be! It’s amazing how quickly you adjust to the simple life and a safari with Conservancy Safaris is one you will treasure for ever!

We have just returned from an amazing and very enjoyable trip with Conservancy Safaris. Boas our driver, guide and expert tracker was absolutely brilliant, his knowledge of wildlife/ fauna and flora was incredible. Boas also introduced us to the local indigenous people benefitting from this unique enterprise. Sonia ‘our wonderful chef’ never ceased to amaze us with the dishes that she created using pots over an open fire. The other back up crew members, Japonsa, Jakonia & Emsis were fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed the camping and loved Etaambura. ‘Margie’ Margaret Jacobsohn, a brilliant author and co-founder of CSN joined us on our trip and shared many stories of her experiences in Namibia. We would definitely recommend Conservancy Safaris Namibia.

What a privilege for our family of four (kids age 13 and 11) to spend two weeks in Namibia with the CSN team! Our guide Boas knew every path regardless of how remote and the camp team lead by Sonia had everything beautifully organized to make us feel comfortable and welcome at every stop. We would never have been able to get to know the beauty of Namibia, its people and their amazing nature conservancy work so well without them. Each day brought us to a new place with its own beauty, and at spectacular camping locations. Great trip for photography fans - landscape, nighttime/star and of course wildlife. I think birders would also really enjoy. Truly amazing, we highly recommend.

Jamás he visto una zona tan especial como esta. Su belleza, lo abrupto de su imagen y el contraste de desierto con cataratas, es para quitar el sueño.

In September we had the great privilege to be the first tourists to undertake a safari in the Chuilexi Conservancy in the Niassa region of northern Mozambique organised by Margie and Garth from KCS. This area, close to the border with Tanzania is one of the great, underdeveloped wildernesses of Africa.
We camped in four different areas, all beautifully located and found the camps to be well set up and run. Despite the fact that this was the first time they had ever done a tourist safari, the staff were all excellent.
The area is mostly miombo woodland with spectacular inselbergs dotted throughout. In fact the third camp we stayed at was half way up an inselberg under an imposing boabab and was one of the most spectacular camps we have ever stayed in.
We saw a large variety of game but the animals were all very flighty due to not being used to vehicles full of tourists.
The visits to the local villages and interaction with the people who live within the Conservancy was a highlight and really helped to underscore the importance of the work that is being done by the Chuilexi Conservancy to protect the wildlife in this region.
This is a trip for African connoisseurs who wish to experience a truly authentic safari experience in a completely unspoilt area.
At the end of the safari, the four days spent at Nkwichi eco resort on Lake Malawi was a truly spectacular end to a memorable trip.

The renowned conservationists Garth Owen-Smith and Margaret Jacobsohn led our 12 day safari into the unspoiled Conservancy areas of North West Namibia.
What a privilege it was not only to travel to, and camp in extraordinary places but during our travels observe and sometimes track desert elephants, black rhinos, lions, gemsbok, zebra etc - all this while absorbing the knowledge of the area and its people related to us by Garth and Mags.
They have spent a lifetime dedicated to establishing and managing the concept of sustainable Conservancy areas that serve not only the Tourism Industry but is proven to empower the lives of the rural people through non confrontational and democratic processes.
Our support team of Sonia, Edison and Emsis never failed us in arriving early, setting up camp and welcoming us with a drink on arrival.
Sonia's wonderful camp fire meals set under magnificent starlit skies never failed to amaze us as to what can be prepared on a camp fire _ including a superb chocolate cake!
I have to mention Etambura fixed tented camp / lodge where we spent 2 nights.
It is a Conservancy Community run camp sympathetically designed to blend into the "koppie" and where the "en suite tents" overlook the vistas that the high elevation provides. The fact that the nearest town for supplies is hundreds of kilometers away and the water supply has to be trucked up to the camp is a testimony to the local management of camp.
What more is there to be said! Don't wait , just book, you will never regret it.

The experience of going too Namibia isn't easy to put into words . It is a wild, desolate and very magical landscape, and it’s extraordinary to see animals surviving in this arid landscape of basalt rocks and, seemingly little else . Kunene Conservancy safaris take you into this beautiful environment, and the remarkable people who live there . They have a great team of helpers to prepare tents and camp sites, often in idyllic dried up river valleys . Sonia prepares delicious food for breakfast lunch and dinner over a fire. She also makes her own home made bread on a daily basis. It is Garth however, who left the most abiding memories for us on our trip . He told fascinating anecdotes about the many years he has experienced in the Kakoveld, and his struggle to involve local communities with their wildlife conservation . It’s as if every elephant , lion and rhino has a name and a history . He and his wife Margaret, an anthropologist, are clearly revered by the Himba and Herero pastoralists , and frankly they are national treasures of Namibia . In common with previous comments, one can only say it was a privilege to have spent so much time with both Garth and Margaret. If you want to go to Namibia , have your eyes opened, be entertained, fascinated and sometimes a little scared - then we would highly recommend Kunene Conservancy Safaris
