This was actually August of 2020. The highlight of our camping weekend. I'd always heard about the desert in Manitoba. Well, it's real. Amazing hike. Devils PunchBowl is pretty cool. Worth the trip.

We went to the Spirit Sands with the Covered Wagon Outfitters. Great outing where you can enjoy the ride and get to the highlights of Spirit Sands quickly and be shaded while doing it. Pets are allowed on the ride and your dog will enjoy the park and also the nearby Marshs Lake. Marshs Lake has a nice trail and a small lake but doesn't offer an experience such as the Spirit Sands.

A beautifully maintained Manitoba park, that does not feel like Manitoba.
Trails for a variety of skill types, desert like areas, picnic areas, natural beauty, and family activities such as wagon rides and mini golf. A must see for individuals, groups, and families.

I hiked the Spirit Sands and Devil's Punch Bowl on April 27, 2020. This is one of my favourite trails in the province and spring is a great season to enjoy it, to avoid the bugs and intense heat in the summer. The trail conditions were fantastic and it was a beautiful and moderately challenging hike! I love how unique this trail is, as it passes through a variety of landscapes including sand dunes, forest and grasslands.

I hiked the full loop through the sand dunes and to the Punch Bowl which was 9 km in total. The hike starts out by passing through the forest. At the first junction, I took the more challenging route to the sand dunes which led to a viewing platform with beautiful views of the scenery! I loved walking through through the rolling sand dunes and it's something you would never expect to find in the middle of the Prairies. There is an optional 1.6 km trail (Oasis Trail) that takes you around the sand dunes, which I did not end up doing. After the sand dunes, the trail enters the forest and then follows through grasslands before arriving at the Punch Bowl. There were beautiful purple Prairie Crocuses blooming in the grasses along the trail which was gorgeous to see! At the junction, I followed the path to the right with a camera sign where there were amazing views of the Punch Bowl and it's vibrant blue-green waters. Very pretty! From there, I went back and continued on the main trail to the wooden stairway and bridge crossing a small peaceful lake, where I spotted a family of turtles sunning themselves on a log. There was a boardwalk walkway that led down to the edge of the Punch Bowl where there was a nice bench and area to enjoy a picnic lunch. There were lots of beautiful views of the different landscapes along the way and it was a peaceful trail to hike.

This is a moderately challenging hike. It involves climbing up steep sand dunes at times, multiple sets of stairs, various sections of ups and downs, and the added difficulty of walking through sand. I would suggest wearing sturdy hiking boots or shoes.

I arrived to the trailhead at 9 AM and was the first one there. On the hike back, I passed multiple groups of people and there were close to 20 cars in the parking lot. Would recommend arriving in the morning to enjoy this trail to yourself. Bring enough water with you and make sure to take your garbage with you. I was disappointed to see quite a bit of garbage (plastic bottles, coffee cups, candy wrappers, toilet paper), littered along the trail. Please respect nature and help preserve the parks!! All of the outhouses along the trail and at the trailhead are currently closed and boarded shut. If you need to do your business in the woods, make sure to take your toilet paper with you.

Really enjoyed my time hiking this trail! It's always a favourite of mine.

This is one of my favourite trails to hike in Manitoba. I have hiked the Spirit Sands and Devil's Punch Bowl Trail many times during my life and in more recent years, have done this hike once every summer.

The Spirit Sands Trail is located about two hours west of Winnipeg in Spruce Woods National Park, just off Highway 5 south of Carberry. There is a spacious parking lot at the trailhead with a clean outhouse-style toilet and a water pump. There are more water pumps along the trail to fill up with. Although they have signs indicating that the water is non-potable and do not drink, it is safe to drink and comes from the water table. The signs have to be posted as the water is not technically treated, however, I have confirmed with a park interpreter that it can be consumed. There are outhouse toilets along the trail as well, shortly after the sand dunes and near the Punch Bowl.

The trail passes through varied landscapes and ecosystems including grassland prairies, forest, parkland and sand dunes. The sand dunes are a unique environment and it is known as Manitoba's desert. This area is also home to all the different types of snakes in Manitoba and the Prairie Skink, Manitoba's only lizard.

The trail starts off along the sandy trail and leads through a forested area before arriving at a fork in the trail. I took the slightly longer 0.6 km (versus the 0.5 km shorter and easier trail) trail to a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding landscape and sand dunes in the distance. From here, the trail continued on to the sand dunes and widen open desert. Before reaching the sand dunes, you have to climb a wooden ladder placed along the first steep sand dune where you arrive to the vast desert. It definitely does not feel like you're in the middle of the Prairies! There are lots of rolling sand dunes and flat sections of sand which the hike continues crossing. The sand was somewhat challenging to walk on as it was difficult to get a firm footing and traction, especially when going uphill. It was a good leg and butt workout and definitely required some stamina and strength.

The Devil's Punch Bowl is another beautiful sight to admire along the trail. There is a viewpoint overlooking this crater-shaped small lake with vibrant green-coloured water for some great views. It is formed by an underground stream from the Assiniboine River. From here, I took the sandy trail leading down to the Punch Bowl where there are wooden viewpoint areas with benches - perfect places to stop for a picnic lunch. The trail then continues along boardwalks with steps leading down to cross another pretty lake (with great photo opportunities of the tree reflections on the calm water) and then back up more stairs to connect with the main trail again.

After the Punch Bowl, the trail continued through mostly forested sections and looped back around to the trailhead. There were much less sandy sections along the final portion of the hike and the terrain was flatter and easier.

As someone who is in good physical shape, this trail takes me around 4 hours to complete (including a stop for lunch and lots of photo taking along the way). I love the unique environments, fantastic views and beautiful scenery, and interesting trees and plants along the trail (I even found some pincushion cacti!). I recently hiked this trail with a park interpreter and it was fascinating to learn about the medicinal properties of some of the flora and about some edible plants. The entire hike is around 8.5 km and is moderately challenging. It is a loop trail.

Some tips: I recommend starting the trail in the morning as it can get really hot in the sand dunes around midday in the summer. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots (not flip flops - you are not going to the beach!). Come prepared with the essentials (water, map, rain jacket, extra food, etc.). Bring at least 2 litres of water with you (there are a few water pumps along the way if you need more).

I definitely recommend this hike to those looking for a slight challenge, beautiful views and to experience a unique area of Manitoba.

We spent four hours hiking the trails through the Spirit Sands area (formerly called Carberry Desert) in the Spruce Woods provincial park. The flora (grasses, shrubs and trees) are gradually taking over the sand, but there are still lots of areas that show how the ultra-fine sand moves and shifts, and creates a special ecosystem. Trail maps are provided at the entrance (and you'll need to pay the $5 provincial park parking fee at the lot, before you start out), and the map provides a good overview of where to go. You need to be reasonably fit, as hiking up dune trails takes some muscles and stamina. There are horse-drawn wagons that take people around at specific times of the day, but we walked the trails. And we stayed ON the marked trails. There is evidence of people "blazing" their own trail, or going off the marked areas, which is really stupid, because it just adds to the erosion of the dunes and the encroachment of the plants. Wear good shoes - runners or hiking/walking shoes.

If you can handle the hiking conditions (trails have several soft sandy sections, which can be especially challenging going uphill) a great place for a hike. The Spirit Sands Trail is about 2 kms to the top of the sand dunes, with additional trails (up to 2 more kms) on top. Top of the dunes are all sand, with very few sections with firms footing.
Wonderful view on top, but, it was a real challenge for us to try to hike.
None of the trails are wheelchair accessible, and most are too strenuous for the mobility challenged. The better your level of physical fitness, the more you will enjoy the hike. Dress for the weather, carry extra water, and be prepared. Most of the trails are a good distance from assistance if anything happens.
Picnic tables,.water and outhouses, on site (a few locations) but, no food services.
Spirit Sands Wagon Outfitters do offer wagon rides twice a day during the season, which may be an option. (we plan to try next time we visit)

Awesome place for long or short hikes. Still quite wild and a cool anomaly in the middle of a farming province. Bring plenty of water and some snacks as it is hot and dry here. Make sure you know your limits and don’t exceed them as it is certainly a wild area.

Have been to Spirt Sands many times. It's in Spruce Woods Provincial Park. There is parking available & option to take a horse drawn wagon tour or use the foot path & hike. It's quite an experience & the scenery is remarkable. You won't be disappointed. You will need a "park" pass most likely.

We have done a couple different trails at Spirit Sands, both were good groomed, well marked trails. We were here last in September and there were plentiful berries everywhere..some areas are taxing, especially in the heat, so bring lots of water....Pets are allowed and our dog came with us, make sure you have extra water for them too! Nice scenery all around ant the Devil's Punch bowl was worth the long walk....
