I visited Castletown during the summer of 2022. I tried to book tickets online in advance but the OPW website was not working properly so this was not an option. When I arrived at Castletown I went to the ticket office. As there was a busload of Spanish schoolchildren also visiting I had to wait for several hours for the next available tour which – incidentally - was not self-guided as stated on the OPW website. The lady in the ticket office advised me to arrive at the signposted meeting point further down the corridor from the ticket office five or ten minutes before the tour was scheduled to begin. It was a nice day so I walked around the demesne and took some photographs. I then returned to the main house – still with time to kill – so went to the café. The café was very busy, mostly due to the Spanish school children buying ice lollies. I purchased a coffee and was advised by the young girl working in the café that there was another room just across the hallway where I could sit as there were no tables available in the café at that point. I had noticed this room on the right on the way to the café, the door propped open by a stack of wooden highchairs, little Spaniards sitting at the tables and playing on their mobile phones. During the time it took for me to drink my coffee the children disappeared and I found myself alone in the room. As I was preparing to leave the room I took a few quick photos of the fireplace and the vaulted ceiling. At that point a woman wearing a skirt suit and a silk scarf – presumably an OPW employee – burst into the room and indignantly declared, ”EXCUSE ME, *WE* ARE IN HERE”, gesturing to a group of people behind her, glaring at me, and waving her hand in the direction of a sad-looking stack of stale uncovered croissants assembled on a table, the same stack of croissants I had seen the Spanish children pawing over so had - incorrectly, it would appear - assumed they were their croissants. I pointed to my camera and quickly made my way past this incredibly rude woman and the assembled group, which was rather embarrassing and a little humiliating. I felt quite abashed as though there had been some wrong-doing on my part – that’s certainly the impression that was given by this woman and to the group she was leading – but was relived she hadn’t appeared several minutes earlier when the Spanish children were there as she’d probably have given herself a stroke. I set off to find the assembly point for the tour – no, no signs anywhere - and then found myself at the end of a curved corridor which led into a room at the bottom of the house. Here I found a sign that stated that there was no unaccompanied entry past this point; I assumed *this* was the meeting point for the tour. As it got closer to the scheduled start time for the tour I kept wondering where everyone else was. I decided to head back towards the ticket office/shop to make sure I was at the right meeting point and as I made my way back up the curved corridor I met the tour coming down the corridor. The lady leading the group said “Excuse me, what were you doing down there?” and before I could respond she added, "Oh, are *you* the *one* we've been waiting for??” and I said yes, and she said “well, you weren’t at the meeting point”, tapping her watch to imply that I had somehow held up the group. I said "I was told to meet at the sign and the only sign I could find is down there” and she said, “That sign is in the wrong place. You shouldn’t have been down there - the meeting point is in the hallway outside the café”. Several other people in the group chirped up stating that they has also been unable to find the meeting point. Our group was then met by our tour guide, a really lovely lady wearing leopard-print ballet flats who was engaging, knowledgeable, and very friendly - if the review was for her alone she'd definitely get a five-out-of-five - but, unfortunately, my experience was tainted by the interactions that led up to the guided tour, both of which were completely unnecessary. How difficult can it be to provide adequate signage, in the right places, and - oh, I don't know - close the door of a room that is not for public access, despite forming part of the cafe?? Very disappointing. Between their pathetic website with its incorrect information and broken booking links and their abrasive, supercilious staff, it's almost as though the OPW don't want people to visit Castletown. I do hope the lady with the silk scarf and her important guests enjoyed their croissants.

Built by the richest man in Ireland and remained in the family's hands until the 1960s, saved by the Guinness and now part of Irish heritage. Restoration is on going but what has been done so far is superb

What a house & parkland maintained by our OPW , used extensively by the locals and visitors alike and needs to be preserved & developed in tandem with the needs of its communities

From Alma, 10 years old:
We got a tour in Castletown building by a nice woman named Celine. She was just so nice and kind. She was super friendly towards me and my sister, Fia, who is 7 year old. I would like to thank Celine because she was so nice, kind, friendly, helpful and happy. Any questions we had she answered. Thank you very much. We had a great day😊

This is a fantastic example of the history of the local area. Beautiful Palladian architecture. Lots of wonderful artefacts on display, highlighting the religious, political & cultural life of the local area. I would recommend to friends. The tour guide gave a great tour.

Very good guide Sarah, informative and interesting. I thought the admission was a little bit pricey and the signage re the starting point for the tour could be more prominent, no need to be so secretive about it 😀.

Visited today myself with my partner and 17 month old daughter, had the guided tour at 4pm. The lady tour guide was one of the rudest and obnoxious people I have ever encountered. My daughter wanted to keep moving and looking around so my partner tried to oblige in order to keep her satisfied and quiet so that the tour was not disturbed. We had only gotten into the 2nd room of the tour and the lady tour guide TOLD US that she was "having someone come to take us off the tour" she also told us to move into an adjacent room and not move until this other person came to get us. All of the above was said in a snarky manner and in front of the entire tour group who were visibly uneasy at how she spoke to us. She then proceeded to tell us that we would have been advised that our daughter was far to young for the tour (which was not true, nobody mentioned this to us) which was irrelevant as our daughter was not screaming, crying, or anything else other than encouraging both her mammy and daddy to keep moving so she could look at all of the art work. When we were escorted out by a lady that was very kind, we Informed her of what had happened which is all we could do. We also told her the only reason we didn't go through this tour guide for a shortcut was purely to save any discomfort to the people on the tour, which was a courtesy the guide herself didn't seem interested in giving. This lady should be ashamed of herself and absolutely should not be giving guided tours with such a sour attitude. I'll add one other note and that is this... at the beginning of the tour she was also rude to a young boy of about 8 that asked what she viewed to be a silly question and then said (anyone can ask questions except for you) gesturing the child, granted this may have been in gest bit the child was still visibly awkward after the interaction as her manner was so cold and abrasive. I truly hope this is addressed because it absolutely ruined a tour we were very much looking forward to. We've had our daughter at Malahide Castle for a tour recently and the staff were so engaging and wonderful. I strongly suggest taking a leaf from their book. Everyone else we encountered that worked there was lovely by the way. Just this particular lady was rude enough to ruin your day.

Dear 60derekc. We are sorry that you were unhappy with your visit to Castletown House. The day of your visit was free admittance because of Heritage Week. Another person acquired your tickets on your behalf, when they received the child ticket they were advised that the general house tour can be difficult for very young children as they get bored very easily walking through museum rooms. At the start of the tour, all visitors are advised that they must remain together and with the guide at all times. This is to protect both our important collections and to ensure the safety of our visitors. A member of your party was moving ahead into other rooms to look at the artworks, therefore the guide could not see you. The guide who came to bring you off the tour offered to show you around the house separately to the group, but you declined. As your tickets were free we could not offer you a refund so in lieu of refund, you were offered a complimentary tour on another day which you declined. You received free admittance to our Fairy Trail, and children’s play area. We expressed regret for your bad experience on the day. We addressed this incident, in real time and regret that you do not feel satisfied and felt the need to post on TripAdvisor.

we are an afterschool group and have sent a mixed age group of children several times to do the guided tour. They have really enjoyed this, it is interactive, they allow them to dress up in the clothes and are wonderful at answering all the children's questions. After the tour the children get to play in the extensive grounds and have a treat in the very well run coffee shop. Overall the experience was amazing and the children got to spend the whole day there. The staff are efficient and it was so easy to book. Would highly recommend castletown house for a tour and a day out.
