We visited Coity castle on a wet midweek day in August. We were looking for somewhere to take the grandchildren and opted for three castles namely Candleston, Ogmore & Coity. The castle is the remains of a 12th century fortification and is to be found in the community of Coity Higher near the town of Bridgend. We drove here and there is a small lay by in Heol West Plas that we used to park up.
The castle itself is an open ruin and admission is free. The ruins are large and impressive the children enjoyed climbing and running around the stone walls and though the door arches. The keen student of castles can pick out some former defensive features including the bailey, curtain walls, towers and gatehouses. Walking around the site one can only imagine what it may have looked like in its heyday.
If you like photography there are some good opportunities here, we took pictures of the ruins showing the textures in the stone and old carvings around window and door frames and also tried some black & white photography.
We spent about an hour here before moving on. Certainly, the most impressive of the three castles visited on the day. Our scoring reflects the castle as a stand-alone attraction.

The castle is attractive but uninteresting because, for some reason, Cadw have put up only a small information board by the front gate.
Perhaps it's because I'm used to the high standards of English Heritage, I found it a waste of time. There's plenty of space for information boards, why are they absent.

A lesser known castle but the biggest in the Bridgend area of which there are 7. Well worth a visit if you are in striking distance. Has Elizabethan chimneys which are unusual. Very quiet with few visitors.

Coity Castle walls are being refurbished. Some areas still have scaffolding around it to secure and help the people maintain it.

Normally a nice picturesque castle and worth a visit. As of April 2021 you can see from the photographs that it is undergoing extensive renovation and is not in a safe condition to enter. Check whether it is open or not on CADW website.

Coity Castle is full of history and is a great place to visit.
It is easily accessible although the car park is small (about 6 cars).
The grounds of the castle are roomy and grassy and perfect for a picnic.
Just outside the castle is a small playground for the little ones to play.
There are no facilities attached to the castle but there is a small shop close by.
A great sunny afternoon visit and lots of history (get from the internet). The information boards although good they do not tell the full story of this Ancient Monument.
The castle is a listed building.

The entrance is not well signposted, and easily missed (go up the road to the left of the castle). There is a small car park, unfortunately when we arrived some numpties had parked across a number of spaces so we were not able to park there. As it is in the middle of a housing estate, we parked in the road opposite the castle and walked back to it. There are extensive ruins to explore, the information board at the entrance gives you some idea of what it would have looked like originally. There are also some small plaques on the.walls denoting what each ‘room’ is, i.e. ‘Hall’ / ‘Kitchen’ etc. Good picnic spot. And kids play area just outside entrance.

Although it probably won’t take you more than an hour to look round. This is well worth a visit. It strangely in the middle of a housing estate. Would be knights and princesses can let their imagination.
No toilet or cafe facilities but it free and easily doable.
