Visited on a quiet Saturday morning. As with most Cathedrals, the size and scale is impressive. The ceilings are rather ornate, and everything is quite magnificent. There is currently an art exhibition on displaying pieces of art constructed from metals and a few other materials from different artists. Interesting enough. The crypt was great to see. Having visited Wells Cathedral recently, it was noticeable that some of the things aren’t clearly marked and are lacking information which does help make any visit more interesting (for example the font here looks old, but there’s no information about it displayed whereas in Wells everything was clearly explained).
Comparisons aside, a lovely space, felt calm and peaceful. Free entry but donations welcome. Cafe looked great and has a nice selection of food (GF and dairy free) and the toilets were clean.
Don’t miss the border in the garden, the Magnolia were already in bloom and by spring it will be gorgeous!
Definitely worth a visit.

We travelled to Hereford for a short getaway but didn’t have any plans as to what to do. We went into the town which unfortunately as many towns nowadays does show signs of decline. My husband then noticed the cathedral was only a short walk away, we are not religious people can appreciate the beauty of these buildings.
We were not disappointed, the building was beautiful, the stain glass windows were fantastic & the history was fascinating. Although inside was fairly busy it was still such a calm & tranquil place to be.
It is definitely worth visiting if in the area, if only to appreciate the workmanship put into these beautiful buildings.

Hereford Cathedral hosts a selection of tours for visitors wanting to explore more of the Cathedral during their visit. For those wanting a real challenge the tower visits are also offered. You are also able to visit the Cathedral gardens which surround the Cathedral. The Hereford Mappa Mundi housed here is the largest medieval map to survive and is considered to be a real historic treasure. The Chained Library holds over 1500 rare books including a copy of the Magna Carta dated 1217 and issued by Henry 3rd. The stained glass windows are outstanding especially on a sunny or bright day. We were fortunate to be present when an organist was playing the Cathedral organ which added real atmosphere to the Cathedral visit. The volunteers present were most helpful and visitors are invited to make a small donation of £5 to aid the £2M running costs of the Cathedral. Open daily 10am until 5pm with Evensong at 5.30pm to which visitors are invited to attend.
The Cathedral also has a cafe and shop open daily.
A very enjoyable visit in a relaxed atmosphere.

Nicely proportioned Cathedral with a peaceful feeling. We were warmly greeted by one of the volunteers - thank you - and made our way around the Cathedral . Beautiful stained glass windows with a watery weak sun behind showing the colours.
The refectory was welcoming as it was a very cold day and a hit snack was welcome.
The chained books library took you back many centuries and you can imagine how valuable the written word was and how difficult it must have been reading them by a candle or rush light!
The Gurney Patent heaters were working well , now powered by gas, but in the not too distant past stoked with coal.
THE Mappable Mundi gives us sight of how the world looked many centuries ago , have a look at the English translation to see where the British Isles are.
Please look out for the small family chapel and perhaps sit for a while .
Enjoy.

Comparatively small cathedral but a good looking one. Lots of stained glass and some chunky pillars.
The main attraction here is the Mappa Mundy – over 700 years old and the chain library which is pretty unique too. There is a charge of, I think £6 to see these but entrance to the cathedral is by donation/free.

Does Hereford Cathedral really discriminate against disabled visitors by nit providing disabled parking?
Clare S
Presteigne, UK74 bidrag
As others have commented, we do not offer public parking at all, as space around the cathedral is so limited. If disabled visitors are coming to a special event, they may contact the cathedral office - details on our website - and parking spaces can be allocated to them.

Will the cathedral be open after the 1.30 ceremony on Good Friday?
Yes, it will. The Liturgy of the Passion is quite long - it probably won't finish until well after three o'clock - but once it is over the cathedral will be open until after Evening Prayer which is said at 5.30 pm in the Lady Chapel.

Is there an entry fee and if so how much is it?
Hello! As others have said, entry to the cathedral itself is completely free, though donations are appreciated and we do charge for guided tours.
Details of current entry fees for the Mappa Mundi, Chained Library and special exhibitions can be found on our website under 'Visit Us' - we currently charge £6 for adults (£5 students) and various prices for family groups.

Hello, can you tell me if dogs are allowed in the cathedral or grounds please.
Just to clarify the situation on behalf of the cathedral - I'm afraid that our office staff are not able to look after dogs while their owners look round the cathedral. This may have been possible in the past but the limitations of our office space and the many other responsibilities of our small staff make it impossible. Dogs are welcome in the close and in our Chapter House Garden where a water bowl is provided for them, but only assistance dogs are allowed in the cathedral itself.
